Remember when you voted to take back sovereignty?

Well, the very prime minister who promised to take back sovereignty is now ensuring that it is being taken away again, only this time it is being lost to just one person.

The Prime Minister.

Changing rules to suit himself is the actions of a dictator.

We must hope that he will go quietly, as go he must.

Goodness. Another thread on the same theme? Don’t you get bored? We will all just circle around the same old plug hole surely? I’m off to enjoy a sunny day!

RichmondPark Sat 28-May-22 08:38:40

It's important we don't get bored and that we keep focused on what is being taken away from us.

lixy Sat 28-May-22 08:43:48

When he prorogated parliament I joined the protest outside Downing Street. He hasn't changed at all, but I have run out of disgust and now just feel despair.
I don't think I have ever felt such a lack of optimism about the leadership.

WharfedaleGran Sat 28-May-22 09:08:52

Endless damage over the past few years…

I’m genuinely curious, can anyone help me by pointing out any advantages we’ve gained in the past few years? Real ones… and not the rubbish about the vaccine programme, which we could have done in the same way within EU rules! Please enlighten me?

OakDryad Sat 28-May-22 09:10:14

Agreed RichmondPark. People should not be fooled by Johnson's let me get on with serving the British public rhetoric when what he is serving us with is creeping fascism. Anyone who has read the Queens Speech can see that. Anyone who read the revised Ministerial Code can see that. He is shredding our democracy. He will not go quietly. The electorate has enabled its own Putin.

LizzieDrip Sat 28-May-22 09:20:48

The electorate has enabled its own Putin

Agree OakDryad. I feel so angry at Johnson but also at the weak members of his party who continue to support his dictatorship. Thank goodness for the few who are brave enough to speak up. I’m sorry you’re bored by all this Urmstongran but I happen to care deeply about the erosion of our democracy. I used to wonder what it might feel like to live under a dictator - sadly, now I know.

It may be ‘the same old theme’, but unfortunately we have the same old PM.

Today’s Times New and Politics article :
“ The YouGov MRP poll, which used the same model that predicted the outcome of the general election, shows that the Tories would lose all but three of the 88 battleground seats that they hold by a slim margin over Labour.
Johnson would be unseated…….”
Of course he could alway unilaterally change the voting rules.

But it’s a nice sunny day, so hey, ho!

You have absolutely no idea what it's like to live under a dictator. Believe me. I've been there. And when I hear people come out with this absurd comment it just irritates me.

Grany Sat 28-May-22 09:26:02

The changes to the ministerial code are dangerous. Lobby your MP, now. Before it is too late.

@RepublicStaff

The problem with this is that parliament is very weak in the face of an intransigent PM. The only MPs that can defeat the PM are his own backbenchers or the cabinet. And they will always be aware that their own careers could be at risk if a PM is defeated.

This is one of many reasons why we need a rebalancing of power between government, parliament and people, a written constitution and an independent, effective head of state.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 28-May-22 09:52:21

I’ve mailed my nearest Tory MP.

If people do this I am hoping that the reeks of e-mails that they get will prompt them to find a spine.

The only people tired of these threads are those who will defend Johnson to the end for what reason I can’t imagine
I admire more the conservatives who actually speak out against his practices, but to hang in it there is unexplainable Defending the indefensible

But he got Brexit done, Blubelle. That momentous act of national suicide seems to be the only thing that matters to them.

RichmondPark Sat 28-May-22 10:07:27

"Seven-in-ten voters believe that life in the UK has become more expensive because of Brexit, according to an exclusive new poll for Byline Times."

"64% of all those polled said that Brexit had been negative for the country compared to just 36% who said it had been positive."

"Around a third – 34% – of former Leave voters agreed that leaving the EU had been negative for the country overall."

I think we've got a "perfect storm" at the moment.

A botched Brexit, that's just an expensive mess.
Covid financial shock.
The conflict in Ukraine.
And, the most incompetent, corrupt and clueless government in modern history.

Not good. ?

Wheniwasyourage Sat 28-May-22 10:34:55

I've emailed my Tory MP again. No reply to the last emails I have sent him, but maybe, just maybe, somebody is counting the number of emails in their inboxes...

Not good, indeed, DiamondLily. sad angry

There is always an exception, I think that we understand that?

I blame people who voted for Brexit

Whitewavemark2 Sat 28-May-22 11:13:04

The majority of MPs realise that Brexit is a disaster, but to admit it would bring their raisin d’etre crashing down.

But the point is, we are on the way to it. No we're not in Russia or China. But we're not in democratic Britain anymore either.

Heathermomo Sat 28-May-22 11:32:09

I just find the whole thing astounding. The membership of the Conservative Party voted for him to be their leader. He was fun, a breath of fresh air, not stuffy at all, someone popular. They disregarded his time as Mayor of London, the money wasted on his Garden Bridge, they disregarded his time as Foreign Secretary and ensuring Nazanin Zaghari-Radcliffe got an extra 5 years in jail, they disregarded his sacking from the Spectator for lying. They wanted someone different in order to retain power, and they got it. Unfortunately we did too.
Now he is consolidating his power by rewriting the ministerial code so no-one need resign unless the PM wants them to.
Conservative Party members - what happened to the party of law and order, morality and honesty?

Fingers crossed that this is the one time they're telling the truth.
