The US Supreme Court has just overturned Roe. v Wade. Around 25 states are now set to rule abortion illegal. About 13of them have "trigger" legislation which means they will do so immediately. So sorry for all women in the US and the difficulties they will now face

Whitewavemark2 Fri 24-Jun-22 15:36:46

The USA seems to be culturally going backwards.

This week also saw the courts rule for easier gun purchase.

AmberSpyglass Fri 24-Jun-22 15:37:19

I’m devastated. Lives will be lost unnecessarily over this. Abortion won’t stop, it will just become more dangerous.

midgey Fri 24-Jun-22 15:37:52

But they still put people to death…..

Hithere Fri 24-Jun-22 15:40:44

This and the right to carry guns w/o permit

I am disgusted

maddyone Fri 24-Jun-22 15:41:50

They execute people, they make abortion illegal, and all under a Democratic government. Unbelievable!

maddyone Fri 24-Jun-22 15:43:50

Yes Hithere the right to carry guns! Human rights in America, you can carry a gun but you can’t get an abortion!

Blondiescot Fri 24-Jun-22 15:44:03

An unbelievably backward decision. As has been said on here time and time again, making abortion illegal does not stop the practice - it merely drives it underground. Desperate women will resort to any measures.
And it's amazing how some Americans are vehemently anti-abortion, calling it 'murder', yet see nothing wrong with the death penalty or the right to bear arms. Talk about double standards...

Hithere Fri 24-Jun-22 15:46:22

Or having elementary school kids being killed by shootings

AmberSpyglass Fri 24-Jun-22 15:46:47

maddyone the Dems can’t override a Republican-heavy Supreme Court, though.

maddyone Fri 24-Jun-22 15:48:53

No, of course not Amber, but the question is, would they? I think it unlikely. The gun lobby and the abortion lobby are too powerful in America.

Grandmabatty Fri 24-Jun-22 15:53:33

I'm saddened for American women who no longer have the right to choose embedded in law. Sometimes the world seems to be an awful place.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 24-Jun-22 15:54:09

maddyone

No, of course not Amber, but the question is, would they? I think it unlikely. The gun lobby and the abortion lobby are too powerful in America.

No the Democrats are not like Johnson’s government who ignore constitutional law.

maddyone Fri 24-Jun-22 15:59:27

This discussion is nothing to do with BJ or even Britain. We’re discussing abortion in America, something that British women have good access to.

maddyone Fri 24-Jun-22 16:01:13

Whitewave do you think the gun lobby in America don’t have too much power? Or the abortion lobby?

DiamondLily Fri 24-Jun-22 16:04:56

They will just cross state lines. Irish women used to come over here for abortions.

My ex sister in law, who lived in Cork, Ireland, did it 3 times.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 24-Jun-22 16:06:59

maddyone

Whitewave do you think the gun lobby in America don’t have too much power? Or the abortion lobby?

No of course not. But I was merely pointing out why it is so difficult for the Democrats to change the constitution.
They are not law breakers. As opposed to our government who are.

maddyone the Dems can’t override a Republican-heavy Supreme Court, though.

This is why we lefties (or'thinking people', if you prefer) go on and on about Johnson and his government undermining our constitution. Because our constitution specifies an independent judiciary. Judges in the UK are not political appointments. They are in the US.

Johnson's shower (aka 'government') would very much like our judges to be political appointments.

Hopefully, people can see the awful warning of the USA and steer clear of politicians demonising 'leftie lawyers' to soften us up for politically appointed judges...

(I'm sorry if this offends any US posters, but I think the US is a ghastly example of popular / populist democracy just not working...)

Whitewavemark2 Fri 24-Jun-22 16:11:35

maizie you said it for me - head full of covid - so not functioning on all cylinders (if I ever do)

VioletSky Fri 24-Jun-22 16:13:26

This is absolutely terrifying and will only lead to more children being born into poverty, neglect and abuse.

Those responsible for this aren't pro life, they are pro birth

Ladyleftfieldlover Fri 24-Jun-22 16:21:35

Unbelievable. Such a mixed up country. Americans can’t buy alcohol until they’re 21, but they can buy an assault rifle at 18. A lot of states still have the death penalty and some allow people to walk around carrying guns. Some states allow girls to marry when they’re under 16. This is what happens when judges are political appointments. We could blame the orange monster, trump, but he had plenty of people backing him. Is anyone following the January 6th hearings in Washington? Unbelievable.

JaneJudge Fri 24-Jun-22 16:26:55

It really is unbelievable. Especially given their health care system and everything else

CatsCatsCats Fri 24-Jun-22 16:30:01

This is bad news and I'm finding it hard to believe how such a progressive nation in so many ways is going backwards in his respect.

RichmondPark Fri 24-Jun-22 16:35:20

Women will now have no access to abortion even in cases of rape and incest.

Also it looks as though the Supreme Court might now revisit the right to access contraception.

This was a ball set in motion by those who voted for Trump.
This is why we need the ECHR.

"Justice Clarence Thomas - widely regarded as the Supreme Court's most conservative member - has written a concurring opinion alongside his vote to overturn Roe.

In it, Thomas goes beyond affirming today's ruling to ask the court to "reconsider" past Supreme Court decisions.

He asks to re-evaluate Griswold, which safeguards the right to contraception, Lawrence, which invalidated anti-sodomy laws, and Obergefell, which legalised same-sex marriage nationwide.

In essence, Clarence writes that all three of these rulings - major progressive victories - are now also up for re-examination. " The BBC.

There is really no point comparing the UK with America, whatever I may think of Johnson, it's always been a mistake to think that our common language indicates much commonality on other issues.
