Weekly budgeting

Now that my husband of 40 years are splitting up - when the house sells - he is taking a keen interest in how much I spend on food & cleaning etc. for 2 of us plus 2 cats. He's never wanted to come shopping with me and I'm finding it difficult to convince him about the cost of living even though I'm keeping all receipts, which he chooses not to examine and just shouts at me. What does anyone think a reasonable amount should be to cover these weekly costs?

Why not let him do all the shopping for a month - that should open his eyes

Reasonable is however much you spend. He's never queried it before so why query it now. I agree with Barrow if he thinks you're on the fiddle let him do the shopping BUT he has to buy whatever is on the list you write.

Perhaps it is part of his planning about what sort of settlement you should come to?

I think it is difficult to decide how much someone else should be spending each week without knowing a lot more about you and the way you live.

Perhaps he is worried that he won't cope as well as you nansy but, whatever you spend is down to you if you are doing all the shopping unless, of course, you are running up huge debts grin

I have always been a canny shopper - using all the supermarkets to get the best vfm. I'm a good cook and always cook from scratch and don't buy extravagantly but I do have a well stocked larder which I'm always trying to run down.

Nansypansy I usually spend around £120 per week on shopping and the gas n electric around £100PM. BT £35PM. Hope that helps you ascertain things---Its so sad though that after 40 years you have decided to go your own ways, My Parents parted at exactly the same time as you, they were together for 40 years and My Dad decided that he had taken enough and because he was financially able to he just left...When she died, two year later he said that he did regret leaving but not sure if that is something you feel when you have lost someone, because I was not too close to my Mum and I said more or less the same, that if she were alive I would make more effort.....
