The pleasures of pluralism, the pain of offence

grannyactivist Wed 22-Jan-14 14:54:22

The author has articulated very well what my husband would say if he could write like that. A very well written polemic against political policies relating to diversity and multi-culturalism. I fear though that what we have now is but the thin end of the wedge and 'free' speech is going to be very costly for some people in the future. Perhaps the root of the problem is the willingness of people to be offended?

I’ve saved the article to ‘Pocket’ thatbags as it looks interesting and I shall read it later today.

Oh go away, boring person.
What you suggest is illegal and of no interest anyway to those of us who got our degrees by our own efforts ???

Thank you, thatbags. A very interesting read, and helping me to clarify my thoughts on this subject. I am a Christian, and quite secure in my belief. Surely, anyone of any faith should feel confident that it is robust enough, to cope with attacks/derision/disrespect. If a belief system isn't able to cope with gainsayers, it's not up to much, is it- whether it's religion , politics, or moral code.

Oh, gosh- what a plonker I am !

Still good ?. Thanks for the reminder. Off to read it again.

I tried to find this article to send to someone last year and couldn’t, so I’m delighted it’s cropped up again. I’ve just re-read it and find myself agreeing with the core of it again.

Like chocolatelovinggran I’m a Christian, but have some stark disagreements with others who identify as such - we are most certainly not a homogeneous bunch. I wouldn’t take to the streets over a Jerry Springer opera, as some Christians did, but I would do (have done) to support social justice issues.

Still a good article worthy of resurrection.
