Whilst improving infant mortality is essential, more so is the reduction in childbirth numbers which would result in healthier mothers and babies.

JessM the gap minder video is inspirational.
I think that education is the key, educate the women and you educate the world.

And there is a Rotary project, from this country, dedicated to improving infant mortality rates in India.

Sadly that is the lot of many women around the world.

But there is good news! Co-incidentally I also spotted this just now:

I follow this Australia-based charity on FB - and they do concentrate on the outcomes for women in Ethiopia.

What a sad ending.

Interesting article on todays BBC website about pregnant women doing physical labour. There used to be a myth that women who did such labour gave birth easily. Not true of course. Human birth if left to its own devices has a very high attrition rate. Infant mortality, maternal mortality and birth injuries that ruin the lives of the women.
I find it sad though that the the way to sell improvements, around the world, is because they are better for the baby. The fact that without competent midwifery millions of women are condemned to death or life long suffering is still secondary. sad
Reflects their position in society - telling comment about the fact that women in Nepal do the hardest work because they have the lowest status.
