I saw this film on TV a few nights ago. E .L James says she wrote the book as a love story for women. Having seen it I agree, but unfortunately it is much more about the grooming and sexual abuse of a young girl who is impressed by a handsome and wealthy young man and lets him do whatever he wants, even if it is painful and humiliating. The hero admits that as far as he is concerned love does not really come into it, and all he wants is to dominate. This is the first part of a trilogy and I have read all the books.
You may ask why I am shocked and why I read all the books. I am writing a second romantic novel and need to know what people get up to. As an old lady I have led a sheltered life. E. L. James has sold millions of books and has become wealthy yet she hopes her two sons don't read her books! I will never make much money from mine as I would be truly embarrassed if my children read anything like that in my books.
Am I wrong to cringe at the treatment of young Anastasia and the way she takes it lying down? Or maybe not lying down, but standing up etc. while being bound and blindfolded?
