What is the problem with that phrase? I don't care what anyone's gender is, but that's just daft. A phrase thats been used for centuries within theatre settings.

At an official function I attended last year the proceedings started with 'Men and women, welcome to blah blah blah.' Not only did I slide down the social classes, I was now also second in line to men!

Well I ain't no lady, and OH ain't no gentleman, so I don't care if they drop it!

It is a bit old fashioned. Maybe "could everyone sit down please?" Actually shouldn't have to tell people to sit down in a theatre. Should tell people to switch off mobiles though1

I'm a woman, grapefruitpip, and OH a man, though I frequently preface the latter with a few choice words when he's behaving in a particularly un-gentlemanly way in other words most of the time!
