Amazon Prime phone scam

I just wanted to warn you all of this scam.

Twice today I have had automated messages on our landline.
The gist of both messages was that my Amazon Prime account was about to auto-renew and my bank account debited by (?), and if I wanted to speak to anyone about it, to ....

I ended both calls at that point, so don't know if I was going to be told press a number or dial a number, but either way, it would have been a bad move.

Though I don't actually have an Amazon Prime account, I do buy from Amazon quite often (last time only two days ago), I have been offered a month's free trial every time recently when making a purchase. Because of that, it did cross my mind that I might have inadvertently signed up for it, but a quick check of my account showed that I hadn't.

I know most of us are pretty clued up about such scams, but that doesn't always stop people from falling for a well (or badly-) timed one, so I thought I'd warn you about this one anyway.

I have just had those too!
Because my free 30 day trial is due to end soon, the calls at first seemed plausible but I thought I had heard the figure £39.99 when I was sure it should be £7.99 so I was careful not to press 1 as requested but instead rang Amazon customer services (an achievement in itself!)
They confirmed this was a scam, that my monthly sub is £7.99 and that I had done the right thing.
It was as convincing as I have come across though - I do wonder how many people fall for it and what happens when you “press 1”.
These scams need to be publicised don’t they?

I have also had one of these calls. Could hardly understand what they were saying but put the phone down.

me too - I swear a lot but as it is automated I am swearing into thin air - makes me feel better tho!!!

Anniebach Thu 21-Nov-19 14:01:37

Me too, didn’t listen to all of it.

Alima Thu 21-Nov-19 14:08:43

Yes, us too, simply put the phone down. It was only the once so far, maybe we get a black mark if we don’t respond. Did check out my account settings though!

I'm another who has had these calls. I didn't listen to the whole recording but did check my Amazon account.

Daddima Thu 21-Nov-19 16:30:05

And me! Looking for £39.99.

I've had several of these calls, all automated in a ghastly American accent. I've never listened long enough to hear it right through!

kathsue Thu 21-Nov-19 17:09:11

Me too. As soon as they said £39.99 I knew it wasn't genuine.

Happiyogi Thu 21-Nov-19 17:26:17

Me too. For a number of days and usually more than once a day. Is there a common denominator here? If it were a random problem, nationally, it's unlikely so many of us would have been affected.

They are so persistent I've been getting multiple calls a day for months now.

I received an email recently supposedly from Tv licensing. It warn that direct debit payment had failed and I must enter my bank details to reinstate payment or face prosecution. I KNEW my monthly payment had gone through with no problem. Alarmingly, the email was so convincing with exactly the same logo and colour as the Tv Licencing site.

I forward the scam email to Tv Licencing and deleted it from my inbox. Just wanted to raise awareness, I couldn't do this sooner as Gransnet had a problem re-setting my password!

Me too,I have watched Cold Call on channel5 this week and it seemed far fetched but having received a number of these scam calls it seems feasible and wonder how many people fall prey to these criminals.

I've read some complaints about this Amazon Prime scams at whycall.me few days ago. I suggest everyone to just ignore those kind of calls, texts, and emails, especially if they ask for any kind of personal information or bank details. I think MamaCaz is right. We should always spread the word, just in case someone need the info in the future.

We just had this scam come through on our phone. I'm not even a member of Amazon Prime. Luckily I had warned Amazon and he put the phone down.

I had two or three more of these calls on Friday, but none over the weekend.

When the phone rang this lunchtime I lifted the receiver but said nothing, on the basis that this particular scam (I think) cuts off after a few seconds if it 'hears' nothing.

I got it wrong this time though - after what felt like a really long silence, someone finally said a questioning "Hello?"
It turned out to be a call from our medical centre about the results of a test I had last week.

That could have been embarrassing - just as well I had stayed silent, rather than telling them where to go!

Gonegirl Mon 25-Nov-19 14:38:55

Yep. That happened to us last week. DH said "We're not interested" and put the phone down. Luckily they rang again because it was Battersea Dogs Home with a query about my Xmas order. hmm
