Will we ever have equality?

Race equality is very much in our thoughts at the moment and I live in hope that things will change.

There is also equality between men and women. This has moved on since I was young but not far enough imo.

What do other gnetters think?

My adult children have no colour prejudice whatsoever. I think it's a generational thing. Yes I think race equality will happen in the not too distant future.

AGAA4 Mon 15-Jun-20 15:28:07

I hope so LadyBella. I think young people are mostly not racist too.

Personally, I find it all very confusing. When you consider how many non-white people there are in politics, and who have high positions in society....Mayor of London, University professors, police commissioners, etc., it's obvious that the opportunities for advancement are there.
Anyway, I thought the protests were about police picking on black people and treating them differently from whites?

AGAA4 Mon 15-Jun-20 16:17:10

That is what started it but it has become about so much more.

Madgran77 Mon 15-Jun-20 16:33:38

The trouble is that racism is not just about "colour prejudice" sadly. Institutionalised racism is about systems that work against particular groups.

However I really hope that recent events, much of which is scary, upsetting and sad might lead to some genuine change in aspects of institutionalised racism.

There’s equality between men and women? That’ll be news to my daughters.

Sadly, I don’t think we will have equality between all races in our lifetimes, though I sincerely hope we move in that direction.

This article charts the progress made towards equality in America over the past 60 years . There is still a very long way to go despite advancement in some areas.

Will women ever agree that they are equal to men?. Never, it’s not going to happen, although individuals can achieve whatever goal they want, others will fail and be sure men will get the blame for that.

Whingingmom Mon 15-Jun-20 16:39:10

True equality of race, background, age, wealth, class, sex, opportunity, power would be a marvellous thing but I can’t see it happening in my lifetime.

Tell us how you really feel about feminism?

SueDonin. I am sorry my post came over wrongly. I don't think there is equality between men and women .

I am still smarting from the time when the young man I was training was earning more than me! Just because he was a man.

luluaugust Mon 15-Jun-20 16:51:27

I don't see how we will ever get to a position where everyone says great now we are happy with how things are. When I read there was to be yet another commission I could only think of Sir Humphrey in Yes Minister, keep everyone busy until things calm down.

Davidhs Mon 15-Jun-20 16:52:11

Racism, you can legislate as much as you like, positively discriminate, have an employment quota, you can’t change personal attitudes, many races deliberately don’t integrate and live a lifestyle close to their country of origin. They set themselves out to be different, Blacks in particular have acquired a bad stereotype because of the criminal activities of a minority, Travellers much the same.

It’s not just White attitudes that have to change, everybody’s attitude has to change, in particular everyone has to respect laws and the police.

AGAA4 Mon 15-Jun-20 16:59:42

Luluaugust. Yes. I think there's a Sir Humphrey in this government!

Feminism, women can rise to Head of State or CEO or the myriad of jobs on the way up and. As far as I can tell they do no worse than men would in the same circumstances, many of the professionals I deal with these days are women. I expect good service, if I don’t get it they will get sacked, in the last year I have replaced 2, one male, one female.

There are women doing many of the traditional male jobs, even technical jobs like airline pilots, or computer technicians, if that’s what they want to do fine by me. On the other side there are male nurses and care workers, both mostly female roles, again it’s their choice.

Dont expect men to do the jobs they dislike any more than women doing what they don’t like. Equal pay, yes, for the same responsibility, that’s not going to satisfy feminists

Galaxy Mon 15-Jun-20 18:05:28

Thanks for giving us your permission on what jobs women can do dh. What a relief to us all.
Maybe the feminists will be satisfied when 1 in 5 women are not raped, or when men stop committing 98% of violent sexual crime.

Davidhs Mon 15-Jun-20 18:30:23

As I said Feminists will never be satisfied - not until they run everything!.

Galaxy Mon 15-Jun-20 18:42:15

Women not being raped and sexually assaulted is running everything. That's certainly an unusual perspective David.

Whingingmom Mon 15-Jun-20 18:51:05

Davidh
Although I agree with your first post that all attitudes need to change, I find the second one very patronising. Suggesting that women can “even get technical or airline pilot jobs” or men can “ even become male nurses even though it’s a female job”
suggests you still believe only men can be technical and only women can be caring. I thought we’d moved on from this in 1980s.

SueDonim Mon 15-Jun-20 18:58:15

Agaa4 I think I took your message at face value and didn’t pick up on the nuance until re-reading. smile

Is there any reason why women shouldn’t run everything, if men aren’t as proficient, Davidhs? We’ve had millennia of men running things, it’s about time women had their shot.

Davidhs Mon 15-Jun-20 19:34:18

Whinginmom, you know that’s not what I said, a minority of women are now doing traditionally male jobs. Around 5% of airline pilots are women, at a guess no more than 5% are truck drivers, car mechanics, construction workers, they are not jobs that women find attractive, there is easier cleaner jobs they can do instead.

Galaxy Mon 15-Jun-20 20:24:54

Yes their little female brains cant cope with it. They should stick to cleaning. Although it's interesting that for example New Zealand and Germany both with female leaders have handled the covid issue much better than our country. Perhaps the men should stick to cleaning, maybe in the case of the UK less people would have died.

Madgran77 Mon 15-Jun-20 20:48:14

Google search:

Female construction workers 9.1%
Female airline pilots 5.44%
Female Car mechanics 10%

Male Nurses 11%

And just for "ironic" information:

It is not only women who bang their heads against a glass ceiling. The Old Boy Network is still very powerful in Big Business, The City and the Civil Service. My DN has risen high in his Company on merit, but is at a disadvantage because he did not go to the right school. When he, with his colleagues, go to discuss contracts with another company, he finds he is an outsider. They have all been to a select number of private schools and either know each other and their families or played sport against.

It's fairly clear that lockdown during the coronavirus has impacted much more significantly on mothers, than on fathers. It seems we're back in the 1950's with the bulk of domestic work being done by women. The way in which it isn't like the 1950's is that those women/mothers are also working from home whilst juggling 12 weeks of having small children who would usually be in school/nursery/childcare/with grandparents.
Equality - don't make me laugh.
