I’ve just had a call allegedly from the Telephone Preference Service. The caller had my name, address and postcode and asked me if I’d had a lot of cold calls recently and if so what were they about. The caller then went on to say that within 3 to 5 days the TPS are going to tighten up their procedures and this would mean less cold calls.

All seemed ok so far, then I was told my debit/credit card was due to run out in 2021 and would I like to check and then renew it. At this point I hung up. I’m feel sure it was a scam and wanted to put it out there as I haven’t heard of this before.

Thank you VQ. Did you already know about it or, like me, just assumed? It’s concerning they had all my details. What a lot b.......rs they are!

I'm assuming but the TPS is about stopping unsolicited calls and this would be classed as one. Also they wouldn't ask for bank/credit card details over the phone.

Same opinion as vampirequeen.

TPS is a free service so they wouldn’t have your card details.

I've had a lot of dodgy calls since January, I think some new scam companies have bought electoral rolls, not sure how they also have our mobile numbers. Worrying isn't it. I remember speaking to a person from 02, or so I thought, until it got to the payment part, I said my husband paid for all of our contracts. The man asked for his details and I said I didn't know them - he said can you find his bank statement! Penny dropped and I hung up, luckily!

Definitely sounds like a scam. Be 100% wary of any phone calls you receive which ask for bank card/account details.

On the same day this week I had a telephone call to say my national insurance number had been compromised - hung up. They never rang back! Also had an email from the tax office which I’m sure was a scam but it looked very convincing. Several months ago I had numerous phone calls in one week supposed to come from Amazon saying I hadn’t paid my subscription, again hung up each time. They are very persistent they must manage to con enough people
