Wearing earrings constantly

I think I need my ears re-piercing (done 50 years ago? ).
I haven't worn earrings for ages, and my fingers are less deft now at fiddling with flimsy butterfly backs.
Am thinking of getting some simple good quality stud earrings and wearing them more or less permanently, but I'm not sure whether this is advisable, and whether they might work overnight. I think I have skin like a rhinoceros so no worries about skin allergies.
Many thanks in advance for any advice.

winterwhite I tried to put in a pair of new earrings a couple of days ago and had great difficulty. Dipping the pin (?) into antiseptic cream helped.

However, I've decided to wear little sleepers (not studs) all the time and they are comfortable to sleep in.
They just fit snugly under the earlobe.

I wear tiny sleepers like the ones Callistemon21 describes in the back hole of my pierced ears. They are never taken out and give me no trouble at night. Mind you, I often wear bigger hoops in the front holes and don't take them out either! I think the hinged sleepers are easier to get in than those ones with the very thing wire that you have to stretch and get in the hollow bit on the other side (not describing it very well but I hope you know what I mean.) My grandmother hadn't worn earrings for over 60 years when she died at 95, but could still get them in if needed, as she demonstrated when I was a child with a paper clip!!

thin wire, not thing!

My ears are double pierced, I wear sleepers nearly all the time.

Like most things, they aren’t as good as they used to be. My original sleepers slotted in and clipped together so easily. The more modern versions, (my old faithfuls lasted many years), just don’t clip together as well. I often have to get DH to put them in for me if I have ever taken them out to wear proper earrings.

I wear small hoops as they are much more comfy to sleep in and really easy to keep clean

I wear earrings from when I get up to when I go to bed. I don’t wear anything in my ears at night. I wore sleepers 24 hours a day when I first had them pierced, but don’t bother now.

I wear studs constantly, only take them out to clean them or to put in a different pair if I feel like doing so when we go out.

I wear little huggies all the time too.

You're absolutely right, they are nowhere near as good as they used to be. My very first pair, too many years ago to recall, were hinged and had a really good fastener but naturally they eventually wore out. I have the devils job to get anything like them now, they all seem to be hollow and very flimsy. I don't like studs either.

I wear hook type earrings every day and take them out at night. I found that the backs on the stud type were making my ears itch if worn all day no matter what metal they were made of. Not dressed without my earrings!

I wear mine permanently now, have done for over 2 years and I cannot feel them when laying on my side in bed. I had to go permanent because the hole on the side I lay on was getting squashed and deformed, making it almost impossible to get pretty earrings in. I can wear pretty earrings nowadays (rarely) because the holes are now nice and straight. The studs are very nice, not child-tiny. 18 ct gold from john lewis, they cost me £85 and was money very well spent

I wear hoops on a daily basis. I must say, that over the years the holes have got a bit larger.

I wear little silver circular sleepers most of the time. Change to special posh earrings when I go out.
I always wear silver and have had no problems, even when I had my ears pierced 50 yrs ago.

My ears are double pierced, I wear gold studs more or less permanently in the upper piercing, and wear different fancier ear-rings in the lower which I change regularly.

I wear earrings with hooks that don't need to be closed, always have, and take them off before going to bed, as I find them uncomfortable to lie on.

I left them off for three days last autumn and the holes started closing, that has never happened before and hasn't happened since, which I find odd.

I buy medium-sized silver hoops (the fine ones that you can completely rotate) and wear them 24/7 until they fall apart.

I tend to wear earrings for about a month at a time. I am currently wearing some really comfortable old black hematite drops with levered hook closure. They belonged to DH's aunt, and they were possibly her mum's from the 30's. I did get new clasps put on when I received them.

I tend to like small drop earrings, or mid size hoops. I have quite a few studs, but they aren't comfortable to sleep in.

Very many thanks for all this help. I like hoops but find the small circular sort are difficult to fasten these days, and I have a box full of single drop earrings kept in the vain hope of finding the twin…. Sounds as tho my best plan is to find some earrings I like, go to a reputable salon and get them to ram them in.

My tiny sleepers are quite posh grin
They are quite thick gold with tiny diamonds , they push through like large hoops and fasten with a satisfying click.

I actually use cartilage labret studs in my ears. I prefer the thread less type as they are more secure. You can leave them and sleep in them, but change the fronts if you want to as well.

You want to find a 20 gauges for lobe piercing's. I have to have titanium, but if you are not sensitive, stainless steel would work fine.

Depending on the thickness of your earlobes, most people can use the 5 mm 20 g pieces.

Not sure if I am allowed to post a link, but there are places in the UK that you can order from.

Don't forget these do not come in sets so you order enough.

Callistemon those sound rather lovely. I always wanted to wear earrings even when I was little. Love wearing them, I don't feel dressed until I have them in.

Spice101 Tue 08-Mar-22 04:04:22

I wear stud type all the time. Only take them out if I want something a bit dressier which is not often these days.

I've had pierced ears for about 50 years and always worn something in them 24/7 with no ill effect.

BlueBelle Tue 08-Mar-22 06:46:50

I love earrings especially bold bohemian or ethnic styles had them pieced 50years and never go anywhere without them in but I don’t sleep in them (for the earrings sake not mine) if your fingers aren’t good for fiddling yes wear a comfortable pair all the time

A little tip for keeping them I use ice cube trays in my top bedside cabinet drawer one pair to each cube Never mislay them that way

I wear studs all of the time; my ears are double pierced and I sometimes wear pretty earrings in the other holes.
I do try and remove the studs every so often to clean them as I find that there can be a build up of something which can lead to a bit of a smell! Don't know what the something is but I know it can lead to a smell! But the studs cause me no problems otherwise.
