Grocers' apostrophes

I have just come back from a music session at a primary school and the place was full of notices saying: "NO ENTRY. SAT'S EXAMS"
My first thought would be - this is wrong!!! - how can SATS have any exams?

But it is interesting - when I worked on a magazine, the editor and I used to argue about this one. If we write "doesn't" we put the apostrophe in to indicate that there is a letter missing.....so one might argue that the apostrophe in SAT'S is correct as it indicates the missing 3 letters "EST"

What do we all think?!

It used to be done like that, Mishap, but now the more usual style is to write SATs. Not wrong I think, just a bit old-fashioned. As far as I can remember, that is what Lynne Truss says.
Not done to-day (like that hyphen). smile

But surely the T stands for Tests anyway, so there's no need for an S at all, with or without apostrophe. (That's my take on it, anyway!)

And then there is one school of thought that says they are "Standard Assessment Tasks" ...tests by another name?? hmm
Exams seems a bit strong for a primary school confused

Well I know in Ofsted reports we had to write SATs so it must be right... hmm

Jacey Mon 21-May-12 17:17:48

Is there any 'right' when speaking about Ofsted? hmm

Mamie Mon 21-May-12 17:20:21

The critical reader always thought so...

That settles it then! hmm

We could have a whole new thread on rampant apostrophes! Supermarkets who sell CD's, who is this CD person?

Van seen a couple of days ago - ' J Smith and Sons Plumber's and Builders'. Why only one? DH says he saw the most shining example on the telly. Bar opposite the Chicago Cubs ground: Jack's Welcome's Cub's Fan's. At least it's consistent! You know, it's really quite tedious putting all these punctuation marks in. Perhaps I'll stop using them altogether.

There is a long thread on apostrophes somewhere.......

Lilygran Tue 22-May-12 22:13:33

Aargh!

Anagram Tue 22-May-12 22:24:33

confused?

Lilygran Wed 23-May-12 10:13:15

The thought of a long thread on apostrophe's.........

Elegran Wed 23-May-12 10:17:20

Well, it is pedants' corner, Lilygran It wouldn't be home without a long thread on apostrophes, would it?

At least they weren't offering "Aberdeen burghers"!!
I have seen the opposite mistake i.e. "the burgers of Calais....." smile
