I've just read Stephen Fry's book on Greek Myths that they were discussing. It is brilliant & very funny in places. Mind you - like him- I have always been fascinated by these stories.
I hope to see his show if it comes near here on tour.

Are you referring to SF on Jeremy Vine's radio programme?
I listened to it. Don't mind either of them and am really enjoying Mythos, SFs book on Greek mythology. I've always loved the Greek myths but he really brings them to life.
Jeremy's ok, a bit needy sometimes but aren't all performers.

I have trouble reading Stephen Fry's books because I hear his voice saying them. It puts me off rather than enhancing the content. Shouldn't do that but it does.

I like the Greek myths, but I don't like Fry being regarded as the All-Clever person to go to for having the last word on things! I do find him pompous and he does like to show off. He is always trying to prove that Christianity is false and God is evil but deliberately misinterprets the Bible or ignores huge parts of it. I find him frustrating. But then if people want to listen to him... that's their choice. If they really want to know more about something though they could study it and get the benefit of Teachers who spend their life researching the subject and really know about it.

I also find Brian Cox irritating! The BBC use him as if there is nobody else with any science knowledge, especially regarding Space!

I downloaded ‘Mythos’ on Audible...brilliant ...but then I love Stephen Fry....and since I’m an avid reader, but two eye ops in last 18 months has incapacitated me in the reading dept. i started using Audible. I’m bit addicted to the app now. Just listened to ‘The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists’...realise now I read it when I was about 15...it’s the book they made me an atheist.!

I too love to listen to Stephen Fry, and wish he was back on QI. He has a way of speaking which makes you think he knows everything, which he surely cannot, but then again who knows? I can also listen to Giles B.... can never remember is surname, but love his sense of humour.

Saggi I also read The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists when I was 15. I was an agnostic till my late 20s. Then I started looking into Christianity and realised there was a lot I hadn’t known. I wanted to know what was true so I looked for answers to all my questions and objections, mainly through books. Three years I felt I had enough answers and I became a Christian.

I can recommend this process to anyone.

I quite like Stephen Fry. We have all the Harry Potter books on Audible which he reads, and like them. Sadly Jeremy Vine is arguably the only person on TV and radio who send me straight to the off switch - the things he has said about older people (of which he is one!) are just horrible.

I don't like Jeremy vine doing what was Mathew Wright show .What did he say about older people HM 999 ?

I like Brian Cox because he explains everything in an understandable way - and his voice is soothing!

It was the sentiments in the clip above which I felt were relevant - NOT the man, his voice or his colleagues.

Fred Dibna proved one myth. Patronising Oxbridge B celebs should be taken with a very large chunk of salt.

I find Brian Cox far too ponderous in how presents his stuff.
He does not seem to make it exciting .

I have read several books on the Greek myths and they all seem ridiculous to me. They make no sense and are usually incoherent and totally unrealistic (OK they are about unrealistic beings, but their reactions are always inexplicable as far as I can see.) I like Stephen Fry but I'll give this book a miss. I'm not sure I'll listen to the programme because the jingle drives me mad!

JackyB Most myths are ridiculous, they are simply a way of explaining, via the cultural mores of the time, an event, rule or attitude.
They bear no relation to real life, indeed they are often complete fantasy and shouldn't be seen in any way as realistic.

Maui and his brothers rode on the South Island of Aotearoa and fished up the North Island. That's how New Zealand came to be.
