...O Molly, its 3weeks tomorrow since we with broken hearts said goodbye and you went into your deepest sleep..I'm still finding your dog hairs, still weeping, you were smelly, needy, loving, protective, mythering, nervy.we think you had a pretty awful time before we found you in the rescue home...but I know you had the BEST time with us and the grandkids.on the Moors,in the lake,at the beaches..Fleetwood,Formby,St Anne's,Southport etc..
Dont know how long this hurt will last..it will lessen in time I'm sure..BUT you will always be in my heart..always. Molly dog...xx

farview I cried reading this. I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope with time that you will draw comfort from the wonderful life you were able to give Molly, after her awful start in life. flowers

fairview and Annie

It does get better, honest.....totally heartbreaking when you have to say goodbye?

Fennel Sun 19-Nov-17 10:08:02

Hope the pain gets less,*Fairview*.
I can't bear to think about our little sweetheart leaving us. She's nearly 15 now.

grandtanteJE65 Sun 19-Nov-17 13:29:21

So sorry, but you did the right thing, both in giving Molly a good life and in letting her go at the end.

The pain does get less. I spring clean in similar situations, I find it helps once there are no more hairs, toys, leads etc. ambushing my feelings all the time, so I get them sorted out while I'm still weepy.

BUT I leave photos out, if they were on display - as I discovered years ago that if I put them away, I cry whenever I have to look at them, but if left where they were, I can look at them and enjoy them once the first horrible weeks (months) are past.

Thank you All of you! Am keeping busy...but then out of nowhere the tears come? Have to go Dubai on Thursday to babysit my 11month old grandson so that may help a little..

It will help indeed farview. You mention beaches I knew well many years ago. I too had a faithful hound, long gone, who used to come running with me in the pine woods and sand dunes behind Formby point. You’ve brought back memories of him. He was huge and fearsome looking and I felt quite safe, as a young woman, running in these isolated places with him running alongside.

If the odd person I passed only knew he used to hide under my coffee table if a bluebottle was in the room - he was terrified of them!

I mourned him long and hard, but these days I have the memories of his silly face, his lolloping gait and his smelly kisses. This pain will pass and you’ll remember the good times.

Thank you Friday conjures up a lovely picture! Form by point is a beautiful place! Love your memories..

Hugs )))) Fairview.....don't think there is anybody who has lost a beloved pet who doesn't relate to this.

I loved my German Shep so much...cried buckets when he died...even cried more for him than my dad...who I loved so much also and in fact, my dad cried buckets when HIS dog died too and said he had never experienced so much pain even when his parents died.

I swore I would never ever get another dog because I couldn't cope with the pain. After ten years, I got a pup who is now 3, completely different breed so no comparisons. I am STILL fraught with worry as to how I would feel if this dog died! But its the circle of life I guess and as they say.....better to have loved than never have loved at all.

It WILL get better, you will never forget ...but it gets easier to remember the good times, just like I feel for my dog AND dad who died 9 years ago and my first GC who died at 2 days....it all hurt but my dog didn't hurt any less (hard for any non animal lovers to understand but its true!)

Stay strong, you will get through this.

Fairview my heart goes out to you. I have had to loose two dogs, all the places mentioned here were regular trips for us. I now have another dog he is 8 I dread loosing him. I only lasted 6 weeks last time as I missed the company, I live on my own and have no close family. Very happy memories though. Take care.

Cindersdad Mon 20-Nov-17 10:16:32

I know how you feel. I still get weepy over Cinders who was run over 2nd November, aged 5 years and 5 months. The driver who did stop said that a relative had been taken to hospital and she lost focus, gone too fast and Cinders just got in the way. Just as Molly was special to you Cinders was to me, a companion and soulmate more so than any other pet I've had before.

Been there. Wrote this one about it..
My Best Friend
Our Nina was a Guide Dog, but she didn’t make the grade,
Too friendly and distracted by those passing pals she made.
So they placed her for adoption and we gladly took her in,
Such a lovely Lab retriever, with so many hearts to win.
The children just adored her, and they used to dress her up,
As a funny-looking bridesmaid, she was such a happy pup.
The centre of attention, in our crazy family pack,
But with all the love we gave her she would always give more back.
I would walk her on the beach and let her run along the sand,
And a swim in that cold sea was her top idea of grand.
When she spotted all that water she would tug hard on the lead,
So excited to be in there it was such a pressing need.
And when we got her home again she loved that drying off
With her special doggie towel you could not be rough enough.
As you rubbed her down she’d wriggle and with pleasure she would whine,
As she snuggled in so closely with that tail on overtime.
She was useless as a guard dog, but we didn’t really mind,
As I’m sure that she was sent here as a friend to all mankind.
The years passed by, the children grew, and Nina aged as well,
But doggie years are sadly short, as passing time will tell.
At fourteen years, old lady now, a human ninety-eight,
Our Nina left us for a while, and passed through Heaven’s gate.
It broke our hearts to lose her, as that dog brought so much love,
But we know that when our own time comes she’s waiting there above.
When she sees us there I know for sure she’ll bark and change my fate,
And distract that old Saint Peter, checking tickets at the Gate.
When he turns around to pet her I’ll sneak in to paradise,
I’m no angel, as you all will know, with just a touch of vice.
But our Nina with her heart of gold might save me at the end,
My faithful boon companion, that’s our Nina, my best friend...

Over many years we have lost so many dogs. We have always had Labradors 3 or 4 at a time. It is always dreadful when they go or have to be put to sleep. I have been through this 4 times now and it didn’t get any easier. At present we have 4 labs so that’s at least 4 more times. All I can say is that as the months go by, you look back with happy memories instead of feeling sad. I like to think they are all playing together in a heavenly park just for dogs. My thoughts are with you Fairview, I know just how you feel. A lovely poem Ethelwulf.

Rosina Mon 20-Nov-17 10:31:10

There is nothing quite like this grief - the dog is woven in an out of the fabric of family life and the gaping hole is so painful when they have to go. My dear old girl grew up with the children and was their friend, confidante, fierce protector, comfort cushion and shocking food thief. I miss her still. However, we have since had two rescue dogs, both loved very much. The latest sits with me right now. Someone told me that a dog can leave no will, it has no possessions , but its hopeful legacy is that you will show that same love and kindness to another of its fellow dogs, and because of the unconditional love and devotion your dog gave you, another will be saved.

For me it doesn't get better. it's five years since I lost my very special Hugo. I still want to turn back the clock even though I now have my lovely Poppy who was born the day after he was killed.

I have had many dogs, but he was The One and I miss him every day. I really can't get over it.

LOVE the poem ethelwulf and gorgeous girl Nina in the pics ?

grannyinmypocket Mon 20-Nov-17 10:53:50

So sorry to hear about Molly, but you have given her a good life and taken care of her, you will start to feel better, my old boy Jack had to be put to sleep in June he was 18, I still miss him, it broke my heart, I got a canvas of him made and I've put it where his bed was in the hall so I still see his wee face when I come in, take care, and enjoy your time with your grandchild,?

blueberry1 Mon 20-Nov-17 11:10:16

Sorry to hear of your loss,it is something that non pet owners don't understand.Along with the others here,I have been through it several times and it does ease with time.Be glad for the wonderful life that you shared.

humptydumpty Mon 20-Nov-17 11:15:24

ethelwulf that is such a beautiful poem, thank you for sharing it with us; all us pet-lovers know only too well how heartbreaking their loss is.

gillgran Mon 20-Nov-17 11:34:51

Remember the good times. & the old saying,
"Better to have loved & lost, than never to have loved at all"

Emelle Mon 20-Nov-17 11:36:47

So sorry and I understand so well. We have lost 4 dogs over the years, the last one in December last year at the grand old age of 15. We still had our other girl, Bella which helped and we decided for her sake to get another puppy in March and she has really kept us busy. It is devastating but in time you will think more of the happy memories and be glad that you gave your girl a good life.
