So sorry for you Hilda. The poem is lovely and so apt. "Dodger" (Yorkie terrier) had to be freed from his pain on 19 Dec. I took a pic of his last visit to vet, and it is now set as desktop icon - just for a short time, as I am not ready to let him go. His ashes are "sleeping" in the bedroom at the moment. (And he never even started off as my dog!) Now then - you have set me off again T_T

So sad Hilda. Its so hard to part. My DM wrote a similar poem when she was very ill. She said she had no fear of death as she would have five dogs waiting for her. (She never mentioned my DF!)

I had to say goodbye to my lovely boy Gallo just after Christmas several years ago now. He taught me to contentedly walk and pray for 12 years. Even without him I still do that. I hope you will be able to remember the good times too.

I was just a puppy, when we first met,
I loved you from the start,
you picked me up and took me home
and placed me in your heart.

Good times we had together,
we shared all life could throw,
but years passed all too quickly,
my time has come to go.

I know how much you miss me,
I know your heart is sore,
I see the tears that fall,
when I'm not waiting at the door.

You always did your best for me,
your love was plain to see,
for even though it broke your heart,
you set my spirit free.

So please be brave without me,
one day we'll meet once more,
for when you're called to heaven,
I'll be waiting at the door."

I can't take credit for the poem. I found it online, written by Anonymous. I thought it summed up my feelings exactly. Thank you.

On Thursday my little Parson Russell terrier went to sleep for the last time. Our kind Vet relieved her of her pain, and she passed away in my arms. She is missed.

I lost a treasured friend today
The little dog who used to lay
Her gentle head upon my knee
And shared her silent thoughts with me.

She’ll come no longer to my call
Retrieve no more her favourite ball
A voice far greater than my own
Has called her to his golden throne.

Although my eyes are filled with tears
I thank him for the happy years
He let her spend down here with me
And for her love and loyalty.

When it is time for me to go
And join her there, this much I know
I shall not fear the transient dark
For she will greet me with a bark.
