Are you a cat or dog person?

I like both but have never owned either in adult life. I dislike dogs that jump up at you and feel cross if the owner calls 'it's alright s/he won't hurt you'. I do feel there are some very bad dog owners around.

Have a hankering to get a Jack Russell type dog and call it Doris!

Definitely cats I adore my little princess and she is spoilt rotten but so affectionate. I would never hurt a dog ( or any animal) but I don’t want one

I like cats but I'm really a dog lover. I've had three in the past and won't have another as I do feel they tie you down. I also don't fancy the walks in the dark and bad weather anymore. But I miss the companionship. Dogs are always pleased to see you.

Definitely both. I am president of an animal charity here in Spain. I run the shops. I rarely go to the kennel/cattery as I want to bring them all home with me. We have two cats at the moment. When my DC were living at home we had everything from a Stick Insect to a one eyed snake. Our last dog was nearly nineteen when he died.

Both, have had both, but nothing at the moment. We had a little ginger and white cat that my husband brought home in his pocket, someone walked in one day and said " I hear you want one of these " and produced her, she was about eight weeks old! We've also had Great Danes, most dogs and cats get on in their own homes. Our last dog was so perfect that we don't think another would be so wonderful!

Cats all the way. Cats are so superior, in every way, to dogs. Dogs are more needy; make sure they're exercised, don't leave them on their own for too long, don't leave them outside too long or they'll bark incessantly and annoy the neighbours. They pull on their leash to try and sniff each other's bottoms.

Cats are more independent, they're not bothered whether you're there or not, just so long as you feed them when they expect it. You don't have to go out in the freezing cold late at night to give them a walk and a wee. They don't jump up and mither visitors, begging to be petted. They don't sit staring at you whilst you eat, begrudging you every mouthful. And cats don't try and hump your visitors legs the minute they walk in the door. ????

I'm a dog person and would love to have my own but not allowed to where I live. A dog would help me so much mentally and give me the support that I need.

Well of course you can like both! I'm definitely much more of a cat person though, I'd have one again in a heartbeat, except it seems my entire family husband, both sons', grand daughter and one son's partner are allergic to them I love cats, I love their slightly snooty ways and the saying that goes with that "dogs have owners, cats have staff", although I do think they can be very loving and that isn't always related to food. I feel a cat is an easier pet, it just takes itself off for a walk.

To be a responsible owner of a dog it requires an ongoing commitment of daily walk/s otherwise the animal is being short changed. I haven't ever owned a dog but have had several in my life through friends. In my childhood a close friend had an Old English Sheepdog and he was wonderful to be around, endlessly patient with us whilst we did annoying things to him, like dress him up in our school berets and blazers and in my grown up years had friends who had a Samoyed who I occasionally had for a week-end or two, again a lovely natured dog, unfortunately was prone to skin infections and often had to wear the cone of shame Since the lockdown and more walking outside there have been occasions when I've eyed up the occasional dog with longing.

I love both too, but like other posters I don't like the smell of dogs in the house and would hate to pick up poo!

I've had both but neither for over 30 year. Adopted a rescue dog 18 months ago.

I have never stopped to talk to so many people whilst out walking.

Both, but cats fit in better with a busy lifestyle. GS is desperate for a dog tho. Hopefully one day.

I'm not fit enough to give a dog enough walks now so have had cats for years. I sometimes look after my daughter's dog though and find she's very dependent on humans for her emotional needs too. I love the fact that cats are independent but then come for a cuddle too. I love all animals though.

We’ve had cats and I’ve loved them, but if I had to choose it’d definitely be a dog. Nobody else is ever going to be so pleased to see you, even if you’ve only been gone for 15 minutes.

Having said that, they’re much more of a tie than cats, which is why we don’t have one any more - you can’t go out for the day to a non doggy place without making arrangements. And until the dreaded virus we did go away quite a lot, and kennels around here are v expensive and often need to be booked well in advance.

I wouldn’t have another cat, though. Dh spends a bomb on bird food and our garden is always full of them. It’s quite enough having to chase off the odd neighbour’s cat, lurking in the undergrowth and hoping to pounce.

My cat usually sleeps in another room. I had major surgery last year and when I went to the loo x2 during the night using crutches. My cat miraculously appeared and escorted me there, waited outside the door, escorted me back to bed and then retired to bed again.

She decided, a few weeks later when I could probably manage on my own!

She is a rescue cat, had 2 awful homes before she was two and I think she is appreciative of her home where she can come and go as she pleases but I keep her in each night.

Love them both, but dogs are my favourite. The welcome I get from our labrador (even if I have just popped upstairs for something!) is spectacular. She's very loving and tries her best to sit on my knee, which is difficult, as I am tiny and she isn't! But have to agree they are very needy and the dog hairs and constant hoovering drive me to distraction. My son has a cat who sometimes behaves just like a dog; he runs downstairs to greet me and is very loving, pawing me to give him head rubs. He purrs away, quite happy to sit on your knee and be fussed. If I wasn't so houseproud (sad I know) I would have a houseful of animals.

Cats most definitely. Never really been a dog fan at all, they smell so much, bark for nothing, seem to be out of control (last two owners fault not the dogs). A cat can be so cuddly and can be left for a few days if you go away but each to their own.

I'm definitely cat woman! I have had some truly wonderful little rescue cats during a lifetime of cats - the longest I have ever in my life been without a cat was 6 months. I grew up with them. A house is not a home without a purring welcoming cat.

Love cats - tolerate dogs! In my defence I was attacked by a dog when I was around 3 years old which left me with a great fear of them. I overcame that but not enough to want to own one

I'm a cat lover by nature though I had to get used to dogs (bit scared of them since childhood) after my sister got one - it was either that or never visit her again.

I think introverts are more likely to like cats.

I like all animals, but I LOVE cats. I'm an introvert.
