"Your children are not your children"

Sitting here tonight, I have some time to read over old posts on all sorts of subjects here on Gransnet, many of them regarding relationships with their children.

It has prompted me to print Kahlil Gibran's On Children - this may have been posted before, so apologies if this is so, but really it puts everything regarding our offspring into perspective. Happy end of the year to everyone.

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.

Oh it's a load of over romanticised old cobblers. Our children will be just as good/successful/crap as we are.

Can't stand that Kahlil Gibran. The Prophet is ridiculous. And boring.

It's a bit schmaltzy I agree, but the essential message of letting go and seeing your children as adults, is a good one, I think.

I agree Jo5 - everyone seems to quote The Prophet ad nauseam. I don't say that I totally disagree with some of the sentiments, but Kahlil Gibran gets quoted like holy writ but is probably one of the least read but most quoted books !!

I'm with you,*JO*. Sententious and pretentious!

I think it puts into words a lot of feelings I've had recently. And I find it very comforting.

Like you crimson I find it very comforting.
