Least romantic gifts

With Valentine's Day on the horizon and chatting about this page (and a young friend saying she was somewhat taken aback by getting hand cream 'for worn hands' from her significant other) we thought it was the perfect time to carry on the conversation about least romantic gifts. So what's yours (given or received)? Trying to think of mine...I suppose in some people's eyes it would be a colander - but it was a Nigella one I had wanted for ages so I was delighted nonetheless grin

One Christmas, my husband gave me a pack of large, white Sloggi knickers.

I have mentioned both of these before, but one Christmas I was presented with a gift that seemed to be the right size and shape to be the tablet I had been dropping hints about, but no, it was a digital air compressor for inflating tyresconfused I think it was prompted by the fact that I had had a flat tyre a few weeks previously.

The other was also a Christmas gift. The large, and intriguing parcel, albeit beautifully wrapped was somewhat disappointing. It contained a new toilet seat.

Many years back I spent weeks and a fair few pennies hunting down a certain fishing rod for my OH's Christmas present. He gave me a wall rack which was used to hang the ironing board from and it had a shelf bit at the top to hold the iron.... it never left it's box and that was the last time we exchanged gifts for anything - no surprise!

I would have liked flowers, got a bag of daffodil bulbs.

A rotary clothes line on our first wedding anniversary - I was not impressed

No aggressively unromantic presents for me. DH knows that is something you never do. His DF gave his DM an iron one Christmas. His DM burst into tears and wasn't seen for the rest of Christmas day.

Any household item is a complete no-no!

I was once given a wheelbarrow on Mothering Sunday. It was a fetching shade of orange.

I was once given half a leek, from an ex boyfriend. To say I was speechless was an understatement. Perhaps it’s why the romance never blossomed. ?

Sellotape dispenser. Oven cleaner. Shoe horn. Silver polish! All wrapped in rather nice paper. Grrrr.
I think I had requested dressmaking scissors so maybe he was in a hardware shop and got carried away.

When we had been married 7 years, hubby went on a day trip to Blackpool with his workmates. He rang me in the evening to say they were just about to set off home, and that he`d got me a present. It was a shopping bag.

On our first wedding anniversary DH, assuring me he'd got me "something you'll absolutely love" gave me a Walther PPK.

When I looked less than enchanted with this odd gift he put his arm round my shoulders and said, 'comfortingly, Don't worry Love, I'll show you how to disassemble and oil it.'

No idea
grin

A big roll of weed mat.

A cookery book called ‘365 Meals’, from DH, inscribed inside by him “Another thing to satisfy my appetites,”
I threw it away.

Kenwood Chef - But actually I was thrilled as my previous one had blown up after 35+ years of faithful service.
If the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, the way to mine was through a classy gadget.

The one ex boyfriend of mine actually broke a court order to send me a glittery sex toy with the attached explanation that I "must be missing him".

No, you rapist. Not at all.

First year of marriage my ex presented me with an iron for Christmas. Second year he gave me an indoor clothes airer. He was a slow learner.

An electric carving knife.
I was a bit lost for words at the time as we could rarely afford anything big enough to require carving. However, it eventually came in useful and only recently got chucked out when the motor failed after 35 years of useful service.

Not a present, but a Mother's Day card from DH this morning. He hadn't read the words. He was mortified when he realised, me, I couldn't stop laughing. grin

Grammaretto Thu 14-Feb-19 09:57:52

That's priceless Marydoll
Have a lovely day ♥️

Marydoll Thu 14-Feb-19 10:09:14

God love him, he rushed out and bought another one first thing this morning. He did give me love earrings and sweeties!

shysal...when I had an allotment, I should have loved a wheelbarrow...or a quantity of manure..!
