Our next door neighbors are in their 40s,last Saturday the wife came and asked could she borrow our hoover because theirs was broken and they had some “friends” coming to stay overnight, (swingers). They have visitors every weekend. Sunday came and went then Monday and no attempt was made to bring our hoover back. On Tuesday evening when the wife arrived home from work I went to asked her could we have our hoover back. She replied “Oh do you want to leave it with us and come and get it as and when you need it because we get far more visitors than you do”. I told her in that case she had better buy her own. What a cheek.

I don't think people are afraid to say no. I think the vast majority just want to be helpful and friendly and most of the time that is appreciated - just occasionally you may come across someone who takes advantage so next time they ask you say no.

Now I know why Pampas Grass is a banned plant in Portugal. Too rampant.

Se had lots of neighbours and friends constantly borrowing things from my DH's extensive range of tools etc. Very rarely did they come back without him asking for them so when they came to borrow something he started writing who borrowed what and how long they needed it for - with a maximum time stipulated - on a white board. They were told no return by due date there would be no further borrowing. A few made comments such as "don't you trust me?" but things did come back and on time or before. Borrowers were very keen to see their name crossed off the board.
