Religion/spirituality

I think I will put this in a new thread. It could get lost in the Hymns thread.

Great voices - horrible words. I don't know anybody personally who has done anything so bad that it needs someone to be tortured and die to make reparation for it.
Thankfully, I expect the boys don't give a moment's thought to the words.

Wonderful I loved it thanks wotsa

wotsamashedupjingl Fri 06-Apr-12 10:21:49

I know Greatnan. I have trouble with understanding it.

wotsamashedupjingl Fri 06-Apr-12 10:23:28

I can see that people do do bad enough things to need drastic atonement.

But to put your own son through that?

ninnynanny Fri 06-Apr-12 10:28:55

Beautiful.

ninnynanny Fri 06-Apr-12 10:34:59

If you have no faith what is the point of life, why are we here? Why is there life on earth for what reason? In times of trouble surely everyone prays!

What a lovely setting of an old hymn. They reminded me of the group " angel voices" Anyone else remember thematic.
Thanks jing

ninny nanna, we've had plenty of discussion on this topic on other threads and pretty much agreed to differ. I'm not going to turn you into a Humanist and you aren't going to make me a Christian.

Earlier this week 4yo DGD asked me if the Jesus who died on the cross (we were eating hot cross buns) to save her from her sins, was the same baby Jesus who was born at Christmas. Ever practical, she wondered why he had been born, grew up and died, all in a few months. I explained that it was just a fairy tale and so anything could happen and she was happy with that explanation and said that it was the minister who came to nursery school and told them the stories. She had enjoyed the Christmas story but did not like the man hung on the cross one. Later I asked her if she knew what 'sins' were and after some thought she said that No, she had no idea, but did not think she had ever seen one or had one! No great harm done there then.

Yesterday, via a chatty conversation about children going to Granny's after school, when Mummy is working, 5yo DGS (a deep thinker) quizzed me about what happened later to my Granny and his Mummy's Granny - did they die? Next thing he was crying and saying he did not want me to die, nor Mummy, Daddy, Granpa etc. but then he did not want to die 'to save us all'. I could not console him at all. He had a fixed idea that he, as the only son, had to die horribly 'to save us all'. Yes - the school chaplain had been at work in his Nursery School too. These are not Church Schools, just council run local Primary Schools.

I already have serious concerns about allowing these chaplains to tell their usually quite 'nice' stories as facts to very young children. They come in once a month in the same slot as the fire brigade, dental service, traffic police, etc. and are given the same level of respect for their message. IMO they are instilling guilt into innocent children.

I agree with ninnynanny. smile

Have a good Good Friday.

wotsamashedupjingl Fri 06-Apr-12 12:10:39

Do you think it would be possible to keep any religious discussions on the other threads. smile

wotsamashedupjingl Fri 06-Apr-12 12:11:02

Should have said 'please'. smile

wotsamashedupjingl Fri 06-Apr-12 12:11:49

I guess I meant anti-religion discussions!

Annobel Fri 06-Apr-12 12:17:27

That's what I was suggesting, jingl.

jeni Fri 06-Apr-12 12:24:34

One of my favourites, unusually it has a nice singable alto part!

Granny23 Fri 06-Apr-12 13:06:17

Very sorry to have upset your cosy sing-a-long but my contribution was triggered by the very hymn - 'There is a Greenhill' - which you were lauding. Perhaps you should have posted in the Hymns thread afterall - I never go there.

Greatnan Fri 06-Apr-12 13:12:56

I very much resent the suggestion that my life is pointless. And no, I do not turn to prayer in times of trouble.

Mishap Fri 06-Apr-12 13:23:40

What is the point of life if you have no faith? - well, I think the point is to care for others, spread as much happiness as you can and to love one another. If some people feel that faith in their chosen god or religion makes it easier for them to do that, then that's fine; if others feel that this is not part of it all then that too is fine.

Granny23 - I could hardly read your post - this is exactly my concern about religion in education and how it is presented - how can we justify doing this to children? And our taxes pay for this to happen - and we are powerless to prevent it. Let's just teach them to love and care for each other - they can understand that; it does not frighten them; and it adds to the sum of human happiness.

Annobel Fri 06-Apr-12 13:47:23

Dead right, Mishap. flowers

Greatnan Fri 06-Apr-12 13:51:05

I would complain long and loudly about the children being force fed religion.

bagitha Fri 06-Apr-12 14:13:28

The point is simply to live the life you have. Why worry about a possible life you haven't got and know nothing about?

Sorry. But really.....!

Let's have a listen to these 'ere songs then. I might even know them. Used to sing in the uni choir.....

wotsamashedupjingl Fri 06-Apr-12 14:23:23

That video is amazing Granb. Those pictures! and that lot sure can sing!

Thank you.
