spiritual healing

I am very tempted to seek out some spiritual healing. I know my late husband had severe arthritis in his neck and two ladies from the Baptist chapel put their hands near his neck (didn't touch him!), said some prayers and he never had pain from that day on. I have got problems with my voicebox, larynx and throat and think perhaps it wouldn't help to give it a shot. Does anyone have any advice, or experience here?

Have you tried Reiki? I had a friend who did reiki and although I didn't believe it would work she asked if I wanted her to help my sore throat. I let her try and it was wonderfully warming and it did help. It is just a channeling of healing earth energy through the reiki master's hands. Sounds weird but it can't hurt.

A friend who said she was a healer put her hand on my aching back and it never bothered me again. Inexplicable, but true.

The placebo effect is proven and potent, so it's worth a go. But.....you need to have a proper diagnosis first. Don't want to be missing anything serious.

If the your doc makes a proper diagnosis and is unable to offer a treatment that works, then there is nothing lost - just the potential for disappointment if it fails.

Good luck.

Still no diagnosis then willsandco you must be very frustrated.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 04-Feb-14 09:56:28

Do you believe it would help? Do you believe in God? It might be an idea to spend a few weeks taking time out to quietly pray for help yourself. That might assist in making you receptive to anything the healing has to offer.

No one can tell you if it would work. It is definitely worth a try if you can cultivate the right frame of mind. (there is no magic)

Not being at all unsympathetic, but has your doctor considered giving you anything like antidepressants?

Grannyknot Tue 04-Feb-14 10:44:43

jings I hope the doctor would only consider giving antidepressants to someone who has been properly diagnosed with depression. And although anti-depressants are not addictive (unlike tranquillisers) there are clear reports coming through that people experience withdrawal symptoms when they stop taking them.

wills you asked about experience of this sort of thing: my mother was given the shocking news that she had terminal cancer and had 6 months to live, very bluntly, by a consultant. She twice had fluid drained from her lungs and then refused all further treatment and turned to her admirable, child-like faith and trust in her God. She also went to a well-known faith healer near where she lived. She never told us what she experienced there or what happened, she went a few times if I recall. Miraculously, she went into full remission for 18 wonderful months during which time we almost forgot about her diagnosis and to all intents and purposes she lived a normal life before she became ill again and passed away peacefully.

thanks all. I am having investigations at Sheffield Royal Hallamshire hospital - already had tests and now booked in for scans and they are testing for bulbar onset motor neurone disease (well, trying to eliminate that possibility really!) I am due over there in two weeks. I had all sorts of other symptoms, difficulties swallowing, sleeplessness, lack of appetite constant chest infections but these have mostly cleared up over the last month. I am just left with slurring speech and no one really knows why - the neurologists are on the case! I have been praying, my friends and relatives all over the world have been praying for months now. I'm not at all depressed, just very worried that it may be motor neurone disease. I have been taking manuka honey and my hair, my skin, my nails are better than they have ever been and I feel really well - just my voice is a nuisance, sounds raspy and I seem to run out of air when I speak sometimes. I thought that perhaps I could do with help with that and my larynx. I am getting married on April 12th so I need to be OK to repeat my vows!!! and Jess, no, no diagnosis yet. It takes so long for appointments to come through = just feel in limbo.

Sook Tue 04-Feb-14 11:52:24

A big hug for you willsandco I haven't tried spiritual healing for myself but would definitely consider it. I hope things improve for you and quickly too.

willsandco Tue 04-Feb-14 12:19:17

thank you, Sook. It is just the waiting is worst. It is a long time since 26th October went the neurologist said he wanted to run tests for bulbar onset motor neurone disease...............! Hateful being in limbo like this.

Grannyknot Tue 04-Feb-14 12:35:59

willsandco way too long, Wills. There is definitely a two-tier system of health developing here, where if you can afford/have private you get immediate attention, and if you can't or don't, you take what is on offer.

willsandco Tue 04-Feb-14 12:54:31

I went private on 26th October, 2013 to see that neurologist cos it was another months wait for NHS. This particular Professor of Neuroscience, who is absolutely first class, does not accept private patients. She is completely NHS. I have no argument at all with that, as she deals with some very difficult medical conditions and it means everyone has a fair crack at the whip. In the meantime, we just wait....and wait....and wait.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 04-Feb-14 13:10:17

Grannyknot antidepressants are also prescribed for anxiety. Might help Wills at this troubling time.

Supposed difficulty coming of ssri' s is a myth that should not be perpetuated.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 04-Feb-14 13:11:22

off. Not of.

Grannyknot Tue 04-Feb-14 13:16:04

It is not a myth jings, it is difficult for some people to come off anti-depressants, and on the Royal College of Psychiatrist website it says that 63% of people had difficulty (results of a survey):

Soutra Tue 04-Feb-14 13:16:37

I have had one experience of healing (and I was totally sceptical) when I was at a party and saw a woman passing her hands over a friend's ankle which was strapped up. On enquiring I was told she was a "healer" and the friend was recovering from a borken ankle some weeks, months even previously. OK I said, tell me about it. I absolutely did not want to believe in it but the week before I had hurt my shoulder mucking about with the dog (slid across kitchen floor and collided with an open door which caught me between my neck and shoulder - maybe collar bone?) Anyway. to cut a long story short, she put her hand on my shoulder and it was really hot - I was a bit embarrassed but I colud feel this intense heat through my clothes and the next day the pain had gone and did not return. Maybe conincidence? I really don't know. What have you got to lose? Unless you are being ripped off I believe that anything wich makes you feel better is good as long as it complements any other treatment and is not a replacement for it. (Coffee enemas for cancer etc) You are under massive stress at the moment and faith healing, reflexology, reiki, even aromatherapy can all improve your general well-being. Best of luck flowers

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 04-Feb-14 13:25:25

Grannyknot I think that is more likely to be the original symptons recurring. I know fluoxetine has a long half life in the body, so you can stop taking it and still come off it gradually.

willsandco Tue 04-Feb-14 13:28:11

thanks, Soutra. all that makes a great deal of sense. I have telephoned a spiritual healer today and am going to a meeting on Monday morning. I am looking at all the alternative treatments............!

JessM Tue 04-Feb-14 13:37:11

Have you asked to see an NHS speech therapist willsanco ?

Aka Tue 04-Feb-14 13:53:23

Careful ... There's a difference between a spiritual healer and a Reiki Master.

Anne58 Tue 04-Feb-14 13:58:59

Many years ago my dog had a mild stroke, which left her rather nervous and a bit wobbly on her paws, she would stay close to the wall when walking around the house, and close to the hedge when we went up the field.

A friend of mine had always reckoned he could do healing on animals. He & his wife came to dinner, we were telling him how Poppy had changed since having the stroke. He said "I'll just have a little chat with her" The he just sat next to her and put his hand on her head.

The next day when I took the 3 dogs for their early morning walk around our field, the old girl was like a pup again, running and playing her favourite game of "bowling the Jack Russell" grin

Grannyknot Tue 04-Feb-14 14:43:33

phoenix your friend was a Dog Whisperer Plus!

willsandco Tue 04-Feb-14 17:55:44

Yes, JessM, I have been to see a lovely NHS speech therapist - she says I could well have tissue damage around throat, vocal cords and larynx due to acute acid reflux (and I was rushed into A&E last May with that very thing!). But of course we have to wait for neurological test results and she says that, if they come up with anything, she will help me with any resulting speech problems. I have to see her again on 3rd March, and probably again before I get married on April 12th in case I need help saying the wedding vows! Speech therapist has been wonderful - in fact everyone I have seen in the medical profession has been very understanding and helpful. Cant praise NHS staff enough really.
