It is fifty years since Carson published Silent Spring. One of the most influential books of our lifetime. Not only did it stimulate much greater regulation of DDT and other pesticides but it was a major stimulus to environmental awareness that we now take for granted. Sad that breast cancer deprived the world of her wisdom. And sad of course that although pesticides were regulated, so many environmental issues are so much worse and habitats destroyed or under threat.
