"Apocalypse Not" from Wired Science or "Here's why you shouldn't worry about End Times."

I don't worry - I expect the next generation or two will be ingenious enough to sort out the problems and I won't be here in thirty years!
Remember the panic about the millennium virus that never happened?

That was really interesting.

Bags, many thanks. I have been trying to make this argument on the Climate Change thread for the last few days, without, I think, much success. This article puts it beautifullyand succinctly, much better than I did.

I sometimes wonder whether there is a certain type of personality that is only comfortable when they are convinced that Armegedon is nigh. It used to be the prequisite for the success of extreme religious sects. In these non-religious days when most people worship at the altar of the Absolute Truth of Science, God's Wrath has been replaced by Manmade Climate Change, Epidemic Disease (no change there then) and Obesity.

That must be me flick, I love a good disaster movie.
I get a headache? Must be a brain tumour.
Coughing? Lung cancer.
Family don't phone, they must have been kidnapped by aliens.
MrJod late home from work? Eloped with his mistress.
Official looking letter drops through the door? The taxman has caught up with me.
Crack in plaster? House sinking due to subsidence.
Oh woe is me. Armageddon is my middle name. wink

jodi I do hope you and my OH never meet! He finds my lack of sympathy about his 'brain tumour' very trying grin
