This afternoon I shall be visiting the building of the British Geological Survey (part of a series of 8 tours with a LA course entitled "Edinburgh behind the Scenes")

Their website is very interesting. They research topics like groundwater and environmental modelling.

I shall report back later in the day. Does anyone have any questions for me to ask? If they are posted before 12.30 I'll do my best to get them answered. (but question time could be limited so no promises to get answers to everything)

One of their projects Flood Risk from Extreme Events

Sorry, that is a project they have links to, not one of their own. Posted a bit quick there.

Sounds like an interesting trip & course Elegran. Would be interesting to know their views on Fracking but I'm too late. Please let us know how you got on.

For those within reach of Oxford interested in Geology, BGS are holding a Colloquium with field trips & lectures on Sat March 8th at the Oxford natural History Museum. Details on their website accessed via Elegran's post

I am avoiding having any views on fracking as it raised a few controversies here last time it was discussed. It seems rather drastic to me, but I believe that similar techniques have been used for some time.

It was a very interesting tour, also very tiring as there are four floors to the building and long corridors. Two hours walking about, plus a longish walk from the bus and a walk between buses too, as I missed the direct one I meant to catch. Luckily we stopped for a cup of tea and a biscuit at halftime.

The BGS are the largest section of the Natural Environment Research Council and they have a finger in everything - UK geology, carbon capture, climate change, earthquakes, energy, groundwater, landslides, mineralsUK, shale gas, technologies.

Their news and events page has a list of what is on (not just in Edinburgh) including a Family Fun Day at Keyworth. Sounds a good outing for an even slightly scientific grandchild.

Or granddaughter of course. blush
