Looking up pms.

(35 Posts)

I often want to look back at some information I got in a pm and as I get a lot it takes ages to go through them all. Would it not be possible for us to have some method of putting in a name and getting all the pms we had received from that member
We also very much need a delete/edit button for posts.
Any response, technical folk?

The PMs system is a bit messy blush and updating it is something that's been in the pipeline for a while. It requires a lot of work so we've been holding off while we get other things sorted (like the Local etc). We'll take a look at it again soon though, as we agree, it's not very user friendly.

As for deleting/editing your own posts - it's not really something we're looking to implement, mainly because it would cause complete havoc. You're welcome to ask us to remove a post for you (by reporting it to us).

I don't know of any other forum where you can't edit what you've said, so I don't understand that. I feel we should have some sort of control over what we say and have the right to amend it if we feel we have written something incorrectly. Why would it cause havoc to be able to do so?

Why can't you preview first. If you're really that worried.

j08 Wed 11-Sep-13 21:20:36

Doesn't everyone delete PMs once you've read 'em? Seems easy enough to me.

merlotgran Wed 11-Sep-13 21:28:46

It doesn't take long to preview a post. Apart from the really, really long ones.

If you get so many PMs with important information, surely it would be better to print them (or copy and paste them into a document then print them) and put them in a ring binder.

If your PC crashed they'd all be lost otherwise.

Greatnan Wed 11-Sep-13 21:56:13

I don't have a printer.

Riverwalk Wed 11-Sep-13 22:00:08

How would PMs be lost if your PC crashes?

j08 Wed 11-Sep-13 22:05:12

Couldn't you use ordinary email for important things?

janeainsworth Wed 11-Sep-13 22:12:04

Greatnan you could copy and paste your PMs into a word document as Ana suggests, but no need to print them, just save them in Word. You could put them all in one folder or have separate ones for different people. (I think)

Ana Wed 11-Sep-13 22:14:18

Riverwalk, I realised that was wrong shortly after I posted it! grin

Greatnan Wed 11-Sep-13 22:47:10

I don't always know they are important when I first get them. For example, somebody might tell me something about themselves when we are chatting and some time later I want to remind myself what they said before I talk to them again. It may just be the names of their children but I like to get it right.

Ana Wed 11-Sep-13 22:50:05

I thought you kept a notebook containing such information, Greatnan.

j08 Wed 11-Sep-13 22:50:16

Blimey!

Greatnan Wed 11-Sep-13 23:28:53

You take such an interest in me, Ana, it is quite touching.

Anne58 Wed 11-Sep-13 23:47:00

I still wish that each thread showed the name of the person who started it and the date!

Not impossible, BMC used to do it.

j08 Thu 12-Sep-13 00:12:43

Bet she doesn't keep a dossier! grin

Anne58 Thu 12-Sep-13 00:17:04

.

You're getting a twitch phoenix! shock

ninathenana Thu 12-Sep-13 09:41:21

I'd like the edit facility. It's available on all the other forums I use. Why would it cause chaos ?
I do always preview but sometimes just as I've pressed send I'll think of some additional point I could have made which then means a separate post.

j08 Thu 12-Sep-13 09:44:15

And what's wrong with a separate post? You can have a whole thread of 'em if you like.

Ana Thu 12-Sep-13 10:35:39

I just have a very good memory, Greatnan.

KatGransnet (GNHQ) Thu 12-Sep-13 10:48:58

We'll look into the PMs, and let you know...

As for editing/deleting posts, it would require too many gerbils knitting circuit boards to make it feasible grin

Greatnan Thu 12-Sep-13 10:58:13

But why should you even bother to remember all my posts, Ana? I can't say I return the compliment. grin Do I loom very large in your mind?
