Well done to the ladies football team for their world cup performance.
I feel for Laura Bassett, she was inconsolable. Such a shame.

Poor girl. They have played so well.

They have played so well but still been overshadowed by Wimbledon. Imagine the fuss if the men had got to the semi finals

It was a rotten ending .

An own goal must be the worst nightmare for a player, worse than not scoring a penalty.

petallus Thu 02-Jul-15 19:34:44

What was the score?

POGS Thu 02-Jul-15 20:19:20

Japan2 England1. Own goal toward the end of the game.

They were so unfortunate with the own goal occurring within minutes of the end- they did not have time to rectify the mistake by scoring again.

I felt so sorry for Laura.

I feel for that poor girl who scored the own goal. She must be totally mortified.

petallus Thu 02-Jul-15 20:58:25

How awful for them and her. How did it happen?

petallus Thu 02-Jul-15 20:59:09

You would think it would be quite easy to avoid an own goal.

She was trying to divert a shot at goal by one of the Japanese strikers and misjudged it. The ball hit the crossbar and then bounced just over the line. The poor girl must be feeling awful. I can remember DS going into silent mode for hours when he scored an own goal, aged about 7!

What a nightmare! I'm sure they'll bounce back though. I think I'll start following women's football. There seems to be more of it on the TV these days.

If only that ball had bounced back. grin

My DH has refereed a lot of women's football and appreciates their style of play - more finesse, fewer histrionics.

I am absolutely not a football fan but I have to say hats off to the Ladies Team for doing so well and then having bad luck at the end- hopefully this will make them even more determined.

I think the English Women's Team should be congratulated for beating Germany and finishing third in the tournament see:

I agree.

Let's hope they are on the up and can keep their chin up to win next time.
