I too like boxing. My Uncle was a Professional Boxer and my Dad and his Brothers were amateurs. Many of my friends are horrified that I enjoy such a sport but it is very much a family thing although not something I wanted to take up myself!

Never watch boxing now so haven't a clue who is who in the boxing World.

But watched with my dad, he was an
Ali fan and considered him to be the greatest.

Remember watching Barry McGuigan with my DH when we were first married.

Although I wouldn't actually want my DGC to take up the sport, I have to say that years ago the local police successfully ran and trained youngster in boxing to give the boys something to do and keep them hopefully away from drugs.
Two young lads both brothers became amateur champions.

Oh, I don't know phoenix, I too used to enjoy " real " boxing once upon a time, like Ali, alias Cassius Clay and his antics in the ring. It used to be an art.

I love boxing and tend to agree that we have very few good boxers now I suppose it comes in waves and some decades see a better pool to chose from than others
Yes it is a strange thread I guess for Gransnet I know I m in the minority liking the sport

Sorry, I find boxing rather distasteful, although I am aware of all the arguments about it giving young people the opportunity to learn discipline, getting them off the streets and out of gangs etc.

Also, can't help but wonder why you chose Gransnet to post this on? confused

As far as I'm aware, GN members are not renowned for being boxing afficianados!

Is it just me or are the current batch of Heavyweights so bad the top 5 would not even get in the top 30 pre 1980s?
Apart from Joshua - who I regard as just above average - th rest lack proper boxing skills.
