How is this match going to be safe for the thousands that will attend...already know many people saying that they are travelling to London on Tuesday...we are going round in circles with the self isolation etc....I just despair when am abiding by the rules..

timetogo2016 Thu 24-Jun-21 13:48:00

It won`t be safe Bea65,and i too despair when i and 99% of the populaion are doing exactly what we are told to do to prevent covid19 being spread.

It makes me very cross ??. I’m fed up after spending so much time in a lockdown from October last year. There will be Wimbledon next week as well!

Jaxjacky Thu 24-Jun-21 13:57:14

Tests events so have shown minimal infection

So far….

rosie1959 Thu 24-Jun-21 13:59:14

All people attending have to have had 2 vaccinations or a negative test. We are due to open the country up in just over 3 weeks so I suppose these events have to be tested

I appreciate that those attending the match will be tested before they can go but what about the thousands of other fans who will travel to London “for the atmosphere” and as I don’t think there will be official fan zones to watch the match on a big screen, will be milling around in bars. The young man living next door to me told me this morning that he is planning to go to London with all his friends!

I just hope that vaccinations will be effective to at least reduce the severity and not lead to hospital admissions as I’m sure the number of positive tests will rise.

Oh honestly, please get a life. I really believe that some people (Covid embracers I call them) never want this nightmare to end. The Euros is such a breath of fresh air- to hear the crowds at the games ? I for one am delighted that the vast majority of the population seem to want life to get back to normal and have accepted that we’ll have to learn to live with Covid.

JenniferEccles Sat 26-Jun-21 22:41:34

I would like to ask those complaining to say just how long they expect normal life to be kept on hold?

The majority of the population has been vaccinated so now is surely the time to stop being afraid of going out and mixing with people.

That’s the whole point of the vaccines isn’t it, to give us our lives back.

Many Europeans have far more freedom in foreign holiday opportunities than us, yet as we all know, their vaccination programmes are way behind ours.

I’ve no objection to people going to Wembley to watch the game but why mill around in central London getting drunk, urinating in the street , leaving mountains of litter . Why not watch the match in a pub at home? I guess it’s better than travelling to some unsuspecting foreign city and showing this sort of behaviour to others.

rafichagran Sun 27-Jun-21 03:25:01

Why again are we accociating peoples love of football with getting drunk and urinating in the street, what about other big groups, protest marchers ect who have also gone into London, I never hear them accused of such behaviour.

Like previous posters have said, we must start getting back to normal, most of us now have been vaccinated, and people watching the match at Wembley will have been tested and vaccinated.

I don’t think you’ll find many Covid embracers here,*Maggie Tulliver* , of course we want it to end, but common sense should also rule.
Ironically I suspect “watching it in a pub” would carry more danger of infection- close up together, shouting, potentially breathing in those droplets- than watching outside or in a socially distanced stadium. But the travelling especially by underground is another matter- however you can’t ban travel. Nicola Sturgeon got lambasted for trying that in Scotland recently didn’t she?
As for the anti-social behaviour in the streets- I can only shake my head and despair at this side of human nature ☹️

vegansrock Sun 27-Jun-21 07:24:38

rafichigran If someone is going on a protest they are going for a purpose to march as a group,or whatever, if you are only going to watch a football match in a pub or just congregate on the street ( I’m talking about the ones without tickets) than I don’t understand why they can’t just hang out in their home town. If you don’t think many in such a group will get drunk and behave in an anti social manner, then I suggest you take a trip to London on Tuesday afternoon.

The WHO. Has issued a statement saying that the return to normality will only affect those who were normal in the first place. There has been a pandemic, not a miracle.

I like that! It applies in so many contexts doesn’t it?
“Normal in the first place” gringrin

LauraNorder Sun 27-Jun-21 08:58:26

I like that Lucca, would be amusing if not so true.

rafichagran Sun 27-Jun-21 18:07:01

Veganrock I have been a football supporter all my life. I have taken my children to football matches. Yes there are some who are badly behaved but most of us go for the enjoyment of the game.
I dont have to go to London on Tuesday to know what happens when crowds gather.
Like I said what about protest marches, what about the illegal rave that happened this weekend, why to people insist on associating anti social behaviour with football supporters.
Also for your information pre lockdown I went to a Northern seaside town pre covid, and a 4 pm in the afternoon I was having to dodge vomit and urine which was all over the pavement, I also had to walk around people who were the worse for wear and lying on the pavement, and there was not a football supporter in sight.

Is that just testing people that attend he events officially though or does it include people that just turn up and hang around outside?

Charleygirl5 Sun 27-Jun-21 19:08:52

I live 3-4 miles from the stadium and I will remain indoors all day I think. I certainly will not be on a tube that day because supporters arrive from early in the day although not all are shouting and screaming on the tube. The problem will be if England loses.

Jaxjacky Tue 29-Jun-21 07:27:20

Well, two thrilling games yesterday, don’t want that excitement tonight thank you! A nice 2-0 win would be fine ??????????????
MawBe not in our local, 6 to a table, no standing without a mask, no table wandering, doors wide open and pre-booked tables only.
MayBee70 I assume ticketed attendees only ? in a similar way that school attendees are are all testing, not the families who hang around outside in groups chatting.

Kim19 Tue 29-Jun-21 07:39:34

Like it Lucca. Thanks ?. I'll probably dip in and out of the game unless it is action packed whereupon I'll stay. Only hope the crazy revellers at least stay out in the open air and no one gets seriously hurt.?

Polarbear2 Tue 29-Jun-21 07:46:37

Thought you were going to give us a prediction when I opened the thread. ?. Let’s hope it’s as exciting as last nights games were.

vegansrock Tue 29-Jun-21 08:21:55

rafichigran no one is saying it’s only football supporters - there are plenty of ignorant morons who need no excuse to get drunk and behave abominably. You seem to be saying it’s ok for some football supporters to behave like this as others do it. Of course it’s not ok for anyone. I am saying there is guaranteed to be some of this behaviour this afternoon/ evening amongst those who use the match as an excuse to behave badly. No problem with anyone having a good time but not when others have to clear up their mess.

Thank heavens for a positive approach. We have to start somewhere. If we are going to wait for the day when all new cases, hospital admissions and deaths are all at zero then we have a long wait. Let's get on with it.

25Avalon Tue 29-Jun-21 08:43:31

You can’t actually watch football very easily in the pub with 6 to a table, limited numbers, table service only and no singing or shouting. Big outdoor screens could be erected but although they had them in Glasgow hoardes still travelled to London even without a ticket although asked not to.

It has proved very difficult to stop large scale protests, visits to the beach and football crowds and the police have adopted a laissez faire policy. Loads of football fans have had no football matches to go to for so long and are desperate to get back to the camaraderie and excitement in otherwise boring lives. Unfortunately not all behave. Let’s hope there’s no singing of 10 German bombers!
