Out of fashion or sensible?

Live in jeans, leggings, tee-shirts and have one concert dress. Each year I buy a few tees, a couple of pairs of leggings and if my jeans are looking frayed around the ankles, might replace them. If it's cold, my parka gets put on, but that's about it. Oh, and a new pair of comfy adjustable sandals (last pair £14 from Amazon!), so that's about all I need. Possibly spend £60 annually on all clothes I need - certainly less than £100, even with coat or something expensive!

What is this idea that the clothes will be out of date, as someone mentioned up thresd. It makes no sense. I very rarely buy new clothes because the prices are ridiculous and who needs to get everything new every year. I frequent charity shops and jumble sales, but ebay is my go to place for clothes. I've had some great bargains and if I get fed up with something I've had for a while I sell it on and buy something else. Only exception is underwear, which I always buy new.

The present time has made me rethink my attitude to buying clothes and consumerism in general. And my bank balance has gone up so much in these last few weeks.

I buy all my clothes from charity shops. I sew, so I buy flared jeans, new still with tags for £1 or £2 and narrow down the legs. Funnily enough most of the things I buy are M&S, classic styles that don't date. It's more fun buying in charity shops, you never know what gems you are going find at a bargain price.
Regular shops must suffer though because of the rising popularity of charity shops. I do think we need less consumerism but then more high street shops would close and jobs would be lost. Clothing manufacturers will be suffering because of the lockdown everywhere and if shops don't order summer stock for next year that will be a double blow that they might not survive resulting in more unemployment. It's a vicious circle.

Only ever wear ‘ classics ‘, good jeans, expensive boots( sales, or years old) and jumpers in winter, linen tops and palazzo pants in black white and grey in summer. So fashion? What fShion? I stick to my own.

I have not bought anything new this year except 2 T shirts in a Boden sale before lockdown. I don’t see the point in buying anything at all now as I’m not going into work or socialising and have plenty of things to wear anyway.

I only usually buy new on a seasonal basis when other clothes have worn out as I am on a limited income and lots of new clothes is a luxury. I often get something new to wear at Christmas and that pleases me. If I have money to spare I usually spend it on other things rather than clothes.

On M&S I used to buy a lot from there when younger and working full time but they lost the plot a long time ago and stopped listening to what customers were asking for.

I am a TK Maxx fan. When I was working we would work in the library and cut back through the precinct via TK's, then over to Debenhams. Not been a fan of Next and M&S only rarely. Now since I have been out of commission so to speak I have bought nothing. I actually haven't missed clothes shopping, I have plenty at home and as many have said do not go anywhere. I still have things with the labels on and I plan, one day, to get the sewing machine out and make adjustments on some things.

Does anyone know where I can purchase a black longline waistcoat from? Smart/casual to wear over 3/4 sleeve shirts and long sleeved shirts.

I'm not into fashion, just buy what I like and this is usually from Jumble Sales, Car Boots etc. I have a lovely, fluffy and warm M&S bright pink dressing gown that I bought for 50p 5 years ago from a Jumble Sale and it still looks like new. So I change my clothes quite often, it depends what I can find. There's nothing like the feeling you get when you find a bargain!

Since retirement I realised I no longer need a vast wardrobe of clothes, and since lockdown I wear, wash and wear again about 4 favourite outfits over and over.

I changed my attitude to clothes in 2008 when we had a recession. I decided to love what I had and buy as little as possible. I also have quite a lot of knitting wool waiting to be made into jumpers and cardigans. I have learned what my style is and buy new when there is a sale, to replace something I know I will wear a lot. I have been trying to live a 'nothing to landfill' life, or as near as possible.

I think Caro57 probably sums it up when she says M & S "fashions" are pretty timeless anyway, so for most if us 2020 or 2021 styles, it really doesn't matter much.
With all the catwalk shows being cancelled I bet the high end designers won't just put their stock into storage for next year. They won't want the 12 months behind look, so no doubt more unnecessary wastage by those who sadly think so highly of themselves.

M&S have lovely cotton chino trousers and shorts in a whole range of colours.
Just perfect for this sort of weather.
What’s not to like. I think they cater for us older ladies, but without being frumpy.

Their clothes sections are open in the downstairs departments. I went there today for the food hall.
I still have a gift card from Xmas. Am tempted to buy some shorts. Last years are a tight fit now.

By the time I consider buying something even remotely 'fashionable', it has usually been around for several seasons already, so even by next summer, this year's fashions will still be far too avant garde for me!

I never really thought about M&S, it was just there and I used to pop in and buy the odd top, pair of jeans, etc. Then, we had all our luggage stolen within half an hour of leaving Malaga airport, containing our best/favourite summer clothes. Arrived in Seville in 35 C heat with a pair of pants each - how much you miss an M&S when you want a few basic undies, t-shirts and skirts.

I've changed my shopping style recently. I used to go regularly to my favourite shops and look until I find something I like (which often didn't go with anything else at home).

Now I decide what I'm looking for (to go with my existing wardrobe) and look for that. It's saved me a lot of money and my clothes match! Win/win. I feel more 'put together'.

Well , I am missing the charity shops for my clothes shopping - interesting clothes rather than fashion . Hope that more people will come to charity shops in future as it is the new recycling sustainable future !!!!

I too tend to keep my clothes from one year to the next as I can’t find the style and quality that I want these days.
More often than not if I get a complement from someone about what I am wearing, it’s usually something I bought 10 or 15 years ago when the cut and quality was so much better.
By the way, has anyone noticed recently that M&S jeans and trousers have the right leg not quite straight, with the seam sewn up wrongly? Or maybe I have an odd shaped right leg??

I fell into the 'trap' of buying two new tops at a good discount early on in the lockdown, they are both still with price tags hanging in the wardrobe unworn. I won't be buying anything more this summer for sure. I probably won't in the autumn either, i have a good winter coat which is timeless, a lovely pair of boots and shoes both purchased last winter. I dont forsee going anywhere special for a very long time. The things I am buying right now are for the home, garden and my knitting projects. New Nets and towels online. Carpets will be when the shops reopen, and i need a new blind for the kitchen.

I haven’t had anything new for ages, but wearing old clothes doesn’t make me feel that good about myself, and it’s so easy to get lazy in lockdown, put weight on and do less exercise. I’m now changing my mindset, and getting back in the groove - ready to get myself a few clothes, hair cut and nails done. I don’t care if only my family and I see them, I’ll still feel more myself.

Ha ...thought I was the only one ….looking at some clothes yesterday and wondering if it is time to throw out my work suits …..(I only retired 20 years ago !!!! ...the moths haven't got them, but I probably wouldn't need to wear suits now ...the jackets are in good order and still fit) so why cant I give them to the charity shop ?????? I also have summer skirts from that era...nothing wrong with them so how can I throw them away !!!!
