wearing make-up

I used to put on make-up, especially lipstick, eye shadow and mascara, before going to work in the morning. If we were going out at night I even had false eyelashes.
Then for the last 20 years or so everyone seems to have gone au naturel. But recently I've noticed more women, even my age, look as if they've started to make up again. Especially lipstick and foundation.
I don't think I could be bothered - what do you think?

Well, I like the boost I used to get from putting makeup on.

But now with the wrinkles getting clogged with foundation (or whatever its called now}, and increasing allergies affecting my eyes, I don't get the chance to experiment with it.

I always were make-up for work although crikey knows why as I rarely see a soul all day.

When I am at home (weekends) I enjoy not bothering.

I dont even put the bin out without my face on ,first thing I do even before I;m dressed

I always put on moisturiser, tinted foundation, mascara and lipstick when I go out. Feel old without.

I never have worn foundation couldn’t bear the feel of covering my skin. I wear lick of eye pencil, eyebrow colour and mascara if I go out but otherwise I don’t bother.

Teeny bit of foundation, lipstick and blusher - I'd frighten small children otherwise.

I have never been good with make up. I read (I think on Gransnet) that Bobbi Brown will give free samples to try out. I was shopping yesterday and asked if I could have one. The assistant gave me a tiny pot of tinted moisturiser which I will try soon.

What am I supposed to do with my eyebrows please anyone? They are half grey hair and half black and of course the white ones are spikier! Also they are not very thick.

dragonfly46 Wed 21-Aug-19 15:48:42

kitty I am sure you wouldn't grin

Callistemon Wed 21-Aug-19 16:10:57

Liz you can have your eyebrows tinted. I've never done it myself but DD did it for me a couple of times. It did make a difference as mine are similar to yours.
She shaped them first.
I pull out the white ones which always leaves them a bit sparse!

Daisymae Wed 21-Aug-19 16:15:49

Liz you can get lots of things, including a tinted eyebrow wax from benefit, boots will do it for you so you can get the right shade. Easy to do and looks completely natural. I use a mineral foundation which is more like a powder, mineral eye shadow and a very fine liner and mascara.

I always wear make up when I go out. This time of year I use tinted moisturiser and lipstick. The rest of the time it's foundation, eyeliner & lipstick. I seem to be allergic to most mascaras but I get my eye lashes tinted instead.

Liz46 Wed 21-Aug-19 16:26:42

Thank you Callistemon and Daisymae. I'll give the eyebrow wax a go first. I'd never heard of that before.

EllanVannin Wed 21-Aug-19 16:32:40

I put lipstick on just to answer the phone.! Wouldn't be seen without it. That, and perfume. As for any other make-up I'll put on eyeshadow and attempted eyeliner ( usually poke my eyes out ) and hope to God I remember I've got it on before rubbing my eyes.
Foundation is dry and horrible and emphasises the wrinkles.

When I was younger I never wore make up unless I was going out on a night but around 30 I started to put it on every morning but wouldn't dream of setting foot outside without a full face now. It's like putting my contact lenses in - would have to be dying to be seen in my bottle bottom glasses! grin

I took the grand children swimming today with the full face on. That was after I'd had my nails (gel) and pedicure done.
I know I look better with it than without.

I've cut back on the amount of eye make up I wear but wanted to have a very narrow line of black eyeliner instead of wearing eyeshadow. However I can't seem to work out how to do it; just get a panda eye effect. I do wear brown or green eyeliner but really wanted to try black as it's so fashionable at the moment.

Liz46, goto a beautician and get your eyebrows shaped and tinted. DD recommended this to me and it has made such a difference. It last about 6 weeks and I pay about £20.

I start the day gently massaging lashings of moisteriser into my face and neck then - if I am at home all day, I just add blusher and mascara, I have very pasty pale skin, always have had , and without it I frighten myself if I accidentally see myself in a mirror. If I am going out, I add a dot of foundation, eye shadow and lipstick.

SueDonim Wed 21-Aug-19 19:46:45

How do you keep your face dry when swimming, Petra?

shysal Wed 21-Aug-19 19:47:53

I have got lazy recently. I don't use foundation or powder any more. I just pencil in my sparse brows and add one thin coat of mascara since using Rapid Lash serum at night to make my lashes much thicker and longer. If going out I add a little tinted lip balm.
I don't bother to style my hair either. I add a leave in conditioner after washing and allow it to dry naturally.

I wouldnt leave the house without it not even to play golf but I have whole days like today when I am at home that all I have is a thick layer of moisturiser. I enjoy the whole thing of buying and wearing cosmetics. The modern formulas are much lighter and the colours kinder. I would not wear eye liner though now - very ageing.

KatyK Wed 21-Aug-19 20:04:28

I always have and always will wear make up. I loved it when I was young for fun and glamour. Now I NEED it to cover rotten blotchy, red skin. I rarely go anywhere without it.

"What am I supposed to do with my eyebrows please anyone? They are half grey hair and half black and of course the white ones are spikier! Also they are not very thick."

I brush the hairs upwards and cut the stragglers off with scissors. To colour I use a good sable brush, wetted, and powder eyeshadow, preferably taupe as I am white-haired. I paint in as fine a line as I can. The action of brush on top of the hairs stops the line being too precise and it's quite natural looking.

Barmeyoldbat Wed 21-Aug-19 20:31:23

Liz I have my eyebrows waxed and tinted every 6 weeks or so. Its only a little colour put on the eyebrow hairs and it makes them look a lot thicker. I also have any hairs that are growing on my face that shouldn't be there taken away at the same time. Cost is only £18. Other than this all I wear is a bit of lipgloss now and again.

quizqueen Wed 21-Aug-19 20:32:20

I've never felt the need for make up, just clean hair, a wash and moisturiser and I'm good to go. In the summer I tan well and my hair goes fairer as I am out in the garden a lot and at work.

Unless make up is done very subtly, I think most women (and men) can look like painted clowns with their drawn on thick eyebrows, spikey eyes, red lips and coloured long, false talons...and then there's all that bling! It really isn't a good look. Take a peep at someone you know who goes out with confidence au naturel and then take a look in a mirror.
