Disappointing Expensive Beauty Product

Re the other thread about a Clarins product: just wondered if anyone has paid a lot of money for a beauty product and been disappointed?
When my husband asked me for a Christmas present idea last year I asked him for Clarins Double Beauty Serum. It’s a lot of money and not something I would normally buy because of the price.
I was really disappointed with it found it didn’t live up to the hype and my skin felt really dry, but because of the cost didn’t give up until the last drop was used ?
I was so pleased when I had finished it and could get back to my normal much less expensive face serum.

I bought a BB cream that was recommended on here. It was an awful lot of money and not as good as my cheapo one.

I was given a beauty advent calendar last Christmas full of expensive products none of them made a jot of difference to my skin that I would never of bought I used them all but went back to my Olay.

A couple of Christmas' ago, I was bought a jar of Chanel Sublimage La Creme moisturiser (£200). What a disappointment. No better or worse than Aldi's. Although the jar looked good on the bathroom shelf.

Glad it’s not just me then, probably better off sticking to what we know works,
perhaps when you spend a lot of money ( well in my case my husband did) I might have unrealistic expectations.

Wow! Chewbacca did you run off with The Argy’s takings again?!
When the pot was empty did you still leave it on the bathroom shelf for visitors to see?Be totally honest.?

I have never bought an expensive beauty product, so can’t add to the discussion, although have sometimes thought that those who do buy and use them ( certain people I know) don’t look any better than I do. Which is a comfort.☺️

No I did not scarper with the Argy's takings! If I had, I'd only have had enough money to buy a tube of germoline! It was the OH who dug deep that Christmas; possibly to make up for the one before where he "forgot"!

And, yes, I most certainly did keep the jar. I refilled it with my Aldi moisturiser!grin

tinaf1 Tue 29-Sep-20 16:54:36

Blimey Chewbacca I thought I was pushing the boat out asking for the Clarins I would be keeping that jar on show for ever more ?

Fernbergien Tue 29-Sep-20 16:58:28

I fancied a Clarins product but was lucky enough to get a sample before I spent out. It made my skin dry. So back to something cheaper.

Millie22 Tue 29-Sep-20 17:15:35

I'm a Nivea girl so I'd get lots and lots of moisturiser for £200. I once spent about £30 on a Clarins product and it smelt like medicine so I didn't use it.

BlueBelle Tue 29-Sep-20 17:27:45

Well I thought I had but if we re talking about hundreds no no no never I spent £18 on an Avon product that was suppose to lightened any blemishes it did absolutely nothing at all so that was my claim to expensive

Callistemon Tue 29-Sep-20 17:33:36

(£200).

'Ow much!? shock

Poppyred Tue 29-Sep-20 17:35:57

Nivea Q10 moisturiser costs £5 a jar ....Aldi does exactly the same one for £1.45.

MerylStreep Tue 29-Sep-20 17:39:14

I've never fallen for the hype of expensive products.
Just this morning I made a face mask of cucumber and Aloe Vera gel.
I was really surprised that I could see results.
Now all I have to do is find out how long I can keep it in the fridge. There's a lot ?

Callistemon Tue 29-Sep-20 17:42:10

I've got a lot of cucumbers!?

I'm currently using a Q10 serum from Lidl for £2.99 a bottle, it suits my skin perfectly, and smells nice too. Other than that I use Nivea soft. Job done. ?

BlueBelle Tue 29-Sep-20 18:36:36

I use soap and water ??? never used any creams and got a a reasonable skin I really do think they are all a con

kittylester Tue 29-Sep-20 19:07:33

You are lucky if you can do that Bluebelle

My skin is so dry that it is really uncomfortable and itchy if I dont use something to moisturise it.

My MIL did the same, Bluebelle. She was told as a young girl that moisturiser made you grow whiskers on your face so she never used moisturiser.

Her skin was lovely until she lost a lot of weight due to ill health (hospital food).

Chewbacca Tue 29-Sep-20 19:19:20

Same here kittylester; I could use axle grease on my skin and it would soon absorb it!

annodomini Tue 29-Sep-20 19:37:26

I don't think I've ever had more expensive beauty products that Clinique. I've also used Liz Earle moisturisers but now I've lowered my sights and find Aldi's Caviar moisturiser and night cream as good as any and much better than some. It's not greasy and is quickly absorbed so that I can apply my M&S foundation on top of it.

tinaf1 Tue 29-Sep-20 21:16:45

You are lucky BlueBelle like Kitty my skin is really sore and itchy if I don’t moisturize too.
But after my expensive and unsuccessful foray into the world of expensive skin care ? I have to conclude that I now know my station and it’s back to Aldi albeit the caviar selection topped of with a dash of Olay and Nivea ?

i rarely stray from Lidl, occasionally Aldi and poundland.
i feel i need some sun protection, so never go out with a naked face. or hands.
apart from that, i don't bother.
