Some software I have found very useful.

Hello everyone

I am new to gransnet and I have a piece of technology I would like to share with you.

My eyesight is very poor these days and I find those "captha's" (the wriggly nonsense text in boxes at the foot of forms) almost impossible to read a lot of the time. I tried to listen to one and it was read out in a terrible wailing robotic voice that was possibly even harder for me to understand!

Anyway, I found some software called rumola that automatically alerts you vocally if there is a captcha on the page and then enters the required information for you at the click of a button so you don't have to try and read it or listen to anything. It works perfectly and I have never had any problems with it.

Its not totally free unfortunately but it is very cheap and reliable.

I was sure it couldn't be just me with a problem with those terrible things! I am just getting used to using the internet so everything is a bit confusing for me but I am really enjoying forums. Its so nice to actually speak to real people on a computer. I always thought of it as more of a solitary pursuit but, clearly I was mistaken!

I do worry a bit that bypassing the capchas may mean that the site is slightly less secure.

Hi Elegran.
The software doesn't bypass the captchas, it runs a program that fills them in for you! You just double click in the box and a little icon somes up showing that it is being read and then the captcha is magically typed out for you! I am pretty sure it is as secure as typing them in yourself but without the inconvenience. Hope that helps clarify! smile

Yes that clarifies it, but now I wonder whether the automatic robots (which they are trying to exclude by having something that a human has to read) are also able to use something like that - which means that the capchas are not secure at all.

Yes, I'm not convinced either, Elegran. It sounds as though there is an easy automatic way to bypass the capchas which defeats their purpose.
