Which new Kindle?

My two year old Kindle is suddenly refusing to connect to our Wifi system. I have done all the usual checks, including rebooting the Kindle.

Luckily I have a birthday on Monday and might go for a new Kindle. I see there are various 'Fires' also a Paperwhite. How confusing.

Any advice much appreciated.

Has it forgotten the password to the wifi? Or has the wifi forgotten about the Kindle? You may have to re-introduce them to one another.

I have the Paperwhite which is kindle books and mags only and not a tablet which I think the "fires" are.It is good for my needs as I don't need a tablet.

I love my new paperwhite, can read it in bed without disturbing the snoring sleeper. I have an ipad so wouldn't need the fire as it is a tablet.
I dont have wifi in the house but just go down the library to use their free wifi when I have bought a book and need to download it.

I probably don't need a Fire either then as I have an ipad and an ipod. Might give the old Kindle a try at my local library to make sure the problem is not just with our wifi.

I put the wifi passwod in but still wouldn't work.

Yes storynanny I had forgotten the night reading aspect, which is surprising because I do it most nights and never have the light on.

If you contact Amazon they may offer you a replacement (same model) for half price. That's what they did me. They want you to keep buying books.

The Fire is said to be not so easy on the eyes for reading books because of the backlight, but that does make it handy for reading in bed without disturbing a partner too much. And it's nice to be able to buy the odd audio book.

If you just want daytime reading, the basic Paperwhite, I think, is the best bet. Cheapest too.

Just looked at Amazon and I see they have "done up" the Paperwhite and it now has a backlight and is more expensive. hmm So for daytime reading I would go for the e-ink one.

I have a paperwhite, about a year old now, and I love it. Also put the kindle app on my phone and tablet but rarely use them. However, was amazed when waiting with my father at the hospital, turned on the kindle app on my phone and it went straight to the page I had been on while reading on the kindle in bed that morning. Slightly spooky - perhaps amazon have a spy in my house!

Thanks for comments.

Have just ordered the new Paperwhite Kindle from John Lewis to be collected on Sunday from Waitrose. My birthday isn't until Monday and I shall make myself wait to start using it until then (goody two shoes!).

jingl my old Kindle is 3 years old so I'm not trying to get a partial refund.

I have a Kindle Fire and I don't rate it. Very slow compared to my iPad and clumsy. I wish I'd stuck to the lighter Kindle like my first one and the screen was kinder to the eyes too.

When this one packs in I'll be going for the Paperwhite I think so you've made the right choice petallus.

Happy Birthday too.

Thanks Aka.

Oh dear! This morning I gave the old Kindle another go and it connected to our wifi system confused.

I am still having the Paperwhite though because it is ordered and I am all excited about it now.

It would help my case if I hadn't been going on to DH about having to cut down on unnecessary expenditure recently.

I am trying to convince DH, who doesn't read much, that the old Kindle would be just right for him.

And you can buy a lovely case for your new one as a present to yourself.

The only drawback with the paperwhite is if you are left handed like me you cant turn the page with my left hand which i use to hold the kindle with as it is on the right hand side of the page if you see what i mean. I am just a bit lazy in bed and like to use one hand, Im still glad i bought it though

Charleygirl Sun 13-Apr-14 16:27:59

Thanks for that advice storynanny. I have an elderly Kindle and I can use either hand to turn a page but being left handed obviously it is easier for me to use the left side.

I have researched if there is a way round reversing the touch screen left and right for back and forward turning but doesnt seem to be. Maybe amazon didnt think of that. There are some similar comments from left handers on their forums.
