I bought a new laptop recently and I really don't want to spend on an Office type software as I would only use it for the odd letter does anyone recommend a free download for this type of program?
Thanks

I use libre office as well - it has a spreadsheet program similar to and compatible with excel and a document program akin to word, you can also save the document as a PDF.

I use Libre Office as well.

It allows you to save documents as Word which means that others to whom you send them can open them. Very occasionally I find someone cannot open my Libre documents in Word (although they should be able to theoretically) so that is why I save them as Word.

I use Open Office. Its opens files from Microsoft Office applications and is opened by them, and is very similar to them. It has Text Document, Spreadsheet, Presentation, Drawing, Database, and Formula. I've used the first three, not yet tried the others. It is excellent and FREE.

I also use Open Office, use it for spreadsheets etc.

I have used Open Office in the past but on my new laptop I have downloaded Libre and I thinks it's better than Open Office and so easy to use.

LibreOffice (which I use) was forked off from Open Office to provide a more usable version, and I find it handles almost everything I want perfectly well. Mailmerging labels is difficult, but I picked up a free program from the label manufacturers, Avery, which makes it a doddle - I use a LibreOffice Calc sheet as a data source.

Unlike MS Office, Libre (and Open) come with the whole suite - including a DBMS for those who need databases and even a Math printing application.

PS: Yes, it is FREE - but I like to send a (small) donation when there is a major update ... just $5.
