Refurbished laptops

So long as the refurb one had a new battery, and a reasonable guarantee..... I think the battery is the most important bit. But I'm no techie.

You might get used to the Windows 10. Son put it on my puter without me knowing and tbh, I can't tell the difference. But I don't do a lot on mine. Just GN and read the papers.

And gmail! (On desktop)

I have struggled with Windows 10 for months jingle , I dislike all those apps, I am so use to Windows 7

Might be worth checking that replacement batteries are still available. My laptop was new, but by the time it needed it's first battery after 2 years they were already obsolete.

I like to buy refurbished as you get more for your money. Ones I have bought have been as new with everything newly installed. There's usually something that doesn't work eg. On my latest the fingerprint recognition, but with a high spec for under £100 you don't expect perfection. Make sure you get a guarantee.

Windows 10 can be set up to work in the same style as previous versions, it is called desktop mode. No apps, just as it was before.

I would shy away from refurbished PC's. Technology moves on so quickly, they are hardly worth the saving. Even a new battery, unless it is from the original manufacturer, is not likely to last long.

I don't think I've got any apps with my Windows 10. Mind you, I wouldn't know one if I saw it.

There is no reason why you need to use Windows anything. Period.

I'm glad this came up as I mentioned to my DD I was thinking of either a refurb laptop or Ipad.
But she said No as anything untoward can still be on hard drive (or even the computer its self) and can come to light through forensics.
Any techs know if this is the case ?

OMG! Surely they would check that out, wouldn't they?!

When I click on the windows symbol at the bottom of my desktop screen, things like Microsoft Powerpoint, Microsoft Word, Snipping Tool (?!) and the printer comes up. I don't use those things. DD does, at weekends.

I can't believe that. TBH. And anyway, there would be a record on the 'puter itself of when you started using it.

It is certainly true that is almost impossible to wipe data permanently from a hard drive, which is why the police can recover data from cleaned drives. However I doubt you would be in any trouble with refurbished PC and would not be held responsible for old data on it. The drive c;leaning tools most commonly used do not make a very good job and even an informed amateur could recover data.

Why would the police want to look at your laptop?
I buy from laptops direct and most of their refurbs are latest laptops that have been returned straight after being taken out of the box for one reason or another, so they have not been used enough to be incriminating. I would keep clear of shops that buy and sell old laptops.

Anniebache DD bought a refurbed Lap Top for DGs from LTs Direct and has been very pleased with it,its on Windows 7 which they like no problems at all it was in factory condition when they got it.

I didn't say the police would look at my lap top, I have little knowledge of computers, I thought if something vile was on one I bought it could come up on my screen .

I,m just saying, my 2 desktops run Vista, and that's because I'm still using CS3 Office 2000, which are perfect for me and I see no reason to change the.

My smart phone and my 10" tablet both use windows 10, and I find no problem in switching from one operating system to the other.

Gonosuch, I have recently bought a netbook and new Lap top both with Windows 10 , my old lap top is Windows 7 , I do not like Windows 10 , my eyesight is failing so I know where everything is on my Windows 7 lap top and this is comfortable for me. I use an iPad most of the time because it's easier than Windows 10

There are two types of refer'b laptops, those from manufacturers which are often returns of unsold models which have been replaced -- they are fine. Older second hand ones, I would give a miss.

I used to purchase 100's of PC's from Dell. They sometimes over delivered or sent the wrong models, they would all be sold by Dell as factory referbs.

I really think you'd be fine with a refurb. Not the same thing I know, but when I dropped my iPad Mini and smashed the screen, Apple supplied an identical refurbished one at half the price of a new one. Seems like new. I'm happy with it.

Oh yes. I would think that's what my iPad Mini is. Definitely go for one from the manufacturers.
