Getting rid of duplicate files

Can anyone recommend a programme (preferably free) that will find duplicate files on my PC, by searches on various criteria, and compare them then delete the surplus ones? My computer (about 7 years old, and seemed to have lots of memory when new) has decided that it is running out of space, so I want to identify duplicate photos etc and weed them out.

The alternative is to buy and install another integral hard drive - there is a slot for one - so any advice on that would be welsome too.

Have you de fragged it recently? That tends to show how much space there is? Would it help storing photos etc on an external disk, though I don't know if that frees up space as I a man ignoramus in all things techie.

There are many 'free' ones but only allow you to delete so many and I find them complicated. You can put hundreds of photos on usb stick which are cheap on ebay!!

another option is to push images to the cloud.

If you select a big chunk of your photo files , select cut and then paste them in a different folder , when the process identifies a duplicate it will ask you what you want to do.

At that stage select the option to compare files , then you can choose which to keep .

It's free , needs no additional software and quite simple.
