Just reinstalled AVG free trial.
Now I find I can't sign any petitions online, eg AVAAZ.
...is the AVG blocking me?

If so what do I do?

AlieOxon Sat 08-Jul-17 19:46:03

Seems it's blocking links.
I can't open the daily Gransnet links.

And - most annoying - I have sent for a replacement phone, and it hasn't arrived today,I paid for quick delivery.
The seller provided a quick link to send an email - and that doesn't work either!!

Hasn't anyone had this problem?

We no longer have AVG but a friend who still uses it has had no end of trouble this last week or so.

I've gathered this is a known problem, but not what to do, yet!

I have never heard of avg! What am i missing?

It's Anti-Virus Guard (computer security software) and I have the free trial. I had it before, but it didn't do this!

I have had the free version for years. They keep telling me that there is a improved one available, but it always turns out to be the paid one. You do have to update the virus definitions frequently though, or one could sneak past.

I recently tried out the one-day free trial of their tune-up-your-pc app, too (which helpfully identified many areas that needed tuning up, but wouldn't do it unless I bought) Decided not to buy - now I keep getting messages that my free trial has ended. Grrr.

How do you stop it blocking the links?

Elegran Sun 09-Jul-17 11:11:47

Mine doesn't seem to. Is there a setting somewhere?

Elegran Sun 09-Jul-17 11:27:02

I have looked at mine. When I load it, first a window comes up with Basic Protection and Full Protection on it - I assume the free version is basic, because the other option is greyed out. Under basic are computer and also web/email, which checks online sites and is probably what is closing down sites.

At the top right of the window is the menu. That includes setings, choosing that you can then go to components, and clicking on that takes you to a list which includes Online Shield. That has things to tick or untick - one of those may be the over-zealous culprit, though I don't know which.

FRorgot to say - in the left column opf the Onliner Shield choices are a whole lot of sub-windows, two of them give you a chance to list sites and exceptions.

Alie if you have Windows 10 it has Windows Defender already supplied and I think that already provides all the protection you need? - without the irritation!

AlieOxon Sun 09-Jul-17 13:36:10

I've been happy with Windows 7.

Elegran it's the free trial of the full version I have downloaded....now I wish I'd got the basic free version! I assume I'd have to delete it to get the basic version....maybe I will.

There's no way I can get to the seller of the phone, so I'm left without.
(Don't laugh, but I let my working phone go through the wash in my dressing gown pocket....smashed the screen.)

AlieOxon Sun 09-Jul-17 13:40:42

Guess what. I opened the AVG again and tried the link to their online support....

No, it doesn't work either.

Elegran Sun 09-Jul-17 16:26:40

Jiust tried support on mine, and it works OK. The site address is support.avg.com/?l=en if you want to try that direct, not going through the AVG app.

AlieOxon Sun 09-Jul-17 18:42:10

I just hope my phone comes tomorrow.

I got to the support site, but can't find search terms to find what I want! I'll try again tomorrow, my head's tired.

Got the phone. Managed to swap the battery and the SIM. And install what vodaphone promptly sent!
I'm a techie?

No. I don't know why my email is playing up, but I am pretty sure it IS the email and NOT the AVG. I have deleted the free trial one (didn't make a difference) and installed the smaller free one for now.....

Elegran Mon 10-Jul-17 14:11:47

Scan the email with (free) AVG and see whether it finds any nasties?

AlieOxon Mon 10-Jul-17 15:45:51

I've scanned once, it didn't find any.

The email hasn't been right anyway, it won't send to several people at once (BCC) at all....
Looked at reinstalling it but it's very confusing! Will try later.

Uninstall AVG and download Windows Defender. This is available on all Windows computers - I think from 7 onwards. Computers with Windows automatically have this available when you get a new one

AlieOxon Tue 11-Jul-17 09:09:02

I find it's Microsoft Security Essentials for 7...too early for Defender....will check it out later, busy this morning!

However the links problem is, I'm sure, with my email setup.
