Address labels

I thought I’d be clever this year and set up labels for our Christmas cards. I downloaded a template for Avery labels and was sold some compatible labels but after the first 3 rows the name comes out printed on the bottom of the label above. Has anyone else had this problem?

I have tried over the years to do this but I assumed it was me being thick as I could never get them in the middle - sometimes above, below or in between labels. I gave up and just write them now!

Oh I’m glad I’m not the only one.

I just put in extra rows to move the names down. Once I had set the labels out I printed them on plain paper and held them up to the light over the labels template that came in the packet of labels and just adjusted row spaces, adding and taking them out to get the addresses to fit the labels.

I also centralised them so that none of the names and addresses had the first letter of each row clipped off.

I never mastered the label printing skill. I just print them on ordinary paper then cut them out and stick with glue.

I print on full sheets of self-adhesive paper then cut up . Available on Ebay.

Oh Shysal that sounds an excellent idea. Not sure My skills are up to that Monica ,but thanks.I thought my template automatically centred them

I have set up Christmas labels using the Avery template which always worked perfectly, although I did take care to centralise them. However, Avery are so expensive (about £15 a box + VAT in our local stationer's!) I bought a cheaper 'own make' and they are slightly out, not enough to make a difference but a bit annoying.
I'm going to have to adjust them and would recommend doing what M0nica does, plain paper first and check.

I had the same problem when using Word. But then I discovered that Publisher (included in some Microsoft packages) had a label choice. Templates for lots of different sizes including cheap alternatives to branded labels. I make labels for my home-made jams.
There may be other free Apps that work like Publisher.

Some useful tips here ladies, thanks. Most of the time I reckon I’m pretty computer literate, been using computers since the early 1980s, but labels totally defeat me. Like Luckylegs I find mine steadily migrate down till they are half on one label and half on the one below.

Perversity of inanimate objects.

I tried every year but always finished with the plain paper option!

I print my Christmas card labels from my Contacts app on an Apple Mac. Like others, I refuse to pay the Avery labels' prices so bought some generic ones. I found settings in the the print menu that required me to set the number of columns and measure various distances between margins and labels. Once I put those measurements in, I was able to save them as a Preset (I called it 'Cards'). I did this last year. This year it was a matter of minutes to check my Christmas group contacts list and print out the 'Cards' labels.

I had to search to find the relevant settings, they were quite well hidden. However, I think it was worth it and, as I amend my Contacts, I can also amend my Christmas card list.

I found the following link for Microsoft Word but haven't tried setting up label printing on my Windows 10 laptop:-

Thank you everyone. I shall persevere with this before next December!

I’m inspired. I’ll try again

I think there is a sub routine for every label, you select this from the Avery site, for whatever label it is, and run the printer with that.
I had sheets of tiny labels about 15mm x 6mm ( 5/8" x 1/4" in real money) for sticking on tiny bottles.
These had graphics and text, and sheets of 100`s of labels printed perfectly.
What is even nicer is the fact that the label packs were a freebie, pack of 20 most common types of label.
Avery do a few freebies.

I do them on plain paper and stick them to the envelope with a pritt stick. Not perfect. I'm an amateur! They all arrived ok.
Must try harder next year ?

Took all day to get them right this year, so printed two sets, one for next year!

The word labels programme is very good, but you do have to ensure that the size of the label you are using there, is exactly the same as the size of the labels you are printing out.
When I was the magazine distributor for a local medical charity, I needed to print of a several hundred address labels every two months, so soon learned to to get this all correct. Could not do these in advance as people moved their address and new people had to be added, etc.
Having set it all up each time, I would always just print one sheet to check it was all okay before then telling the printer to carry on with the rest of them
