If you already have an Amazon kindle , and want a new one , how easy is it to buy it in a shop (e.g. John Lewis) and retain your "library" from the old one ?

It's really easy. I've had 3 now (currently have a Kindle Fire and a Paperwhite). You just sign into your Amazon account when you switch the new device on and everything is there for you.

Very easy. I had a paper white and an Amazon Kindle Fire bought for me for Christmas. Log into your Amazon account and it will all transfer over

Very easy. Absolutely idiot proof, if I can do it!

No problem at all. I upgraded to a kindle oasis when it was on an Amazon black Friday deal and I love it. Battery lasts for a whole book easily.

Thank you Atqui for starting this thread - I had been wondering too. I assumed I would have to contact Amazon and go through a process of explaining everything!

Thanks everyone ! I’m wondering what the oasis kindle is , so shall look that up. I still have my original kindle with no light and not touch screen so due for an upgrade!

Sorry , here’s another question! I’ve looked up the Oasis, and that would be too expensive , but would an 8 Gb paperwhite be sufficient or should I go for a 32 Gb ?

I have a Kindle Voyage with 4Gb storage and it currently has well over 200 books sitting on it waiting to be read (I really must stop buying so many books!). It's easy to clear things off the device to cloud storage when you've read them to maintain space for new acquisitions and equally simple to get a title back if you want to re-read it. I would expect 8Gb to be adequate for most purposes.

200! ? I thought I was bad with five!

Gonegirl Wed 23-Jan-19 19:20:14

Sorry. That was to atqui.

It’s really easy.
You can download books in your kindle account onto your new kindle plus other devices, such as your phone or iPad etc. by using the using the kindle app.
In fact my daughter and I both have kindles, and Mr Moongirl too, all linked via my amazon account so we can share all the books between us. Well, in reality, my daughter and I share our fiction and some non-fiction and Mr M mainly shares some of the non fiction books (as he doesn’t share our taste in fiction, nor has an interest in cookbooks, etc.). The only downside, which is not a problem at all, is that I have to order all the books on my amazon account, but this is outweighed by the benefit of sharing them between us all.
It’s also really useful, say for guidebooks, to download onto a phone or tablet and screenshot maps and information pages which you can read on location without using WiFi or carrying around a heavy guidebook.
Also, non fiction books when read using the kindle app on an iPad, laptop, etc. appear in full colour and much larger too, so are easier to navigate and read, etc.

Well! I didn’t know I could have the kindle stuff on my iPad and phone- very helpful information. So 8gb it is .Thanks again.

Whispersync enables you to start reading a book or listening to an audio book on your Kindle and then pick up where you left off on your phone or tablet, then carry on with your Kindle again later. For whispersync to work, you will need to be connected to the internet though, either with WiFi or mobile data if you are using a mobile phone. Wispersync is enabled by default for books.

I would look at Amazon prices before buying in a shop . I got the latest paperwhite so that DH could have my existing one to take on holiday with us . I like the paperwhite for sitting by the pool as you get no glare. Keep your eye on Kindle unlimited I have a free three month's subscription at the moment and have others as well .
