Advice on choice of camera please!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions - I am a real cave woman believe me - folks laugh at my old flip phone etc. but it's dependable, battery lasts and I know what I'm doing with it!

My AC have contracts that cost the earth, upgrades every five minutes and when they don't reply it's because there's no network or the phone was dead! Probably it's more like they can't be bothered but that's always the reason given!
My little flip is £5 a month, has camera that's ok, no internet but I have that at home and plenty of minutes and texts so why would I want to pay more and complicate matters

My cave is nice and cool in this heat (I wish ) so I'm off now to boil some bones for the old man's lunch!

Smartphones are expensive too aren’t they? I’m relying on my still expensive but multifunctional iPad for pix these days but of course it’s big. Back in 2014 I bought a Nikon Coolpix S9600 and evening on Auto setting got some photos that served well even enlarged and framed for the wall. It’s neat and trusty and tucks into a small handbag or large pocket. Hope you find something that suits!

Thanks everyone - as my young GD says - my mobile is an 'olden days phone' and unfortunately neither DH nor I are any good with smartphones etc. We really are in the stone age I know but we're not twitters, wotsappers, facebookers or anything younger than emails
We have a few ideas from various sources on line but it can wait until 'normality' resumes (if that ever happens) as we are still semi-shielding due to family illness.

I bought a new camera but like others only use my phone now. Smaller and easier to carry about.

On the gadget show, they compared cameras with phone cameras and concluded it wasn’t worth having a separate camera for the average point and shoot users

Soory meant to add, I think what we're saying is that for bog standard 'happy snaps,' if you have a smartphone, cameras are obsolete!

My Samsung Galaxy (not even the latest model, it's a 9) phone takes competition standard photographs. And I can adjust to near focus of an object, take night photos, live focus (whatever that is ), food, edit, add text, it counts down for a selfie so you can position it, slow motion, panorama... and needless to say, I only use "photo" .

The best thing is I double click on the "on" button and up comes the camera, ready to take a pic.

Our camera is also gathering dust.

I too have a camera and video camera gathering dust and use my mobile for both it’s just less faff. Sorry no help with your choice of camera though.

This is probably no help at all, fourormore, if you really want a camera, but we've given up using ours since we've had phones with built-in cameras. So much easier when you've just got one thing to carry, and the photos can be shared with others at one click.

For what it's worth, we were happy before that with our Sony CyberShot, which is a budget point and shoot rechargeable camera with a decent viewing screen, but it's just sitting on a shelf gathering dust these days.
