Paper is dead! Really?

PAPER IS DEAD
For those of you married to your iPhones, computers, tablets, Kindles and whatever - you don't have to understand the language to get the message. Books are great, radios still work, records (discs) have music and above all conversations are still better than e-mails.

It' s only 39 seconds - what do you think?

I have seen that ad on TV here, quite a good one I think. DGS this morning and most days is writing a cookbook with all his special recipes in it.
He goes through reams of paper . His Mum prints off stuff from the internet for colouring in and he carries a little notebook with him everywhere.
We love paper.

No other media covers the news of the day better than a Daily paper, you end up reading articles you would never click on online, I sometimes even end up reading occasional articles on the sports page. shock It has long considered articles on issues of importance. Plus readers letters give extra experience and humour.

Couldn't do without my daily papers.

Paper is very important. Look at the scramble for loo rolls during lockdowns!
When we ran out of loo roll as a large family, my dad would cut newspaper into squares and thread string through it and say “there you are”.
I love notepads, cards and notelet’s and books. Paper packaging is coming back too since we are trying to reduce the use of plastic,
No MawB2 I can’t see paper disappearing completely.

Kindle has been great during lockdown and I have had lots of cheap and even free ebooks, but it’s not the same as a real book. With a real book if you forget who someone is or there is a map you can flip through the pages quickly, plus naughty people and I am sometimes one can flip to the end for a sneak look.

I prefer an online recipe or knitting pattern to be printed off. So much easier to look at.

If I am writing a difficult letter I always prefer to do it by hand and type up afterwards. I seem to be able to think better and I enjoy the connection from arm to hand to pen to paper.

I read novels on Kindle, but prefer paper books for poems, recipes and reference books (eg dictionaries). Oh yes, Avalon. Knitting patterns too, so I can scribble on them, and circle the instructions for the size I am knitting.

I now 'think' on a keyboard as easily as on paper, so virtually never write a rough copy on paper and type it up, like I used to do. I do, however, love notebooks, and always carry a traveller's notebook with me (Paper Republic Grand Voyager Large, fact fans grin), and jot things down as they occur to me when I'm not using the laptop.

Names of songs, quick recipe ideas, notes to self, reminders, present ideas, all of that (and more) would be a pain to write on a screen, although I do use the Notes app on my phone if I know that the note will be shared later. I like that it automatically synchs to my iPad and laptop.

So overall, I love technology, and am not remotely resistant to new ways of doing things, but I don't think that that means that paper is dead (or only fit for using as loo roll!). It doesn't have to be one or the other, does it?

I'm the opposite. I prefer to type up my thoughts first, possibly because I did shorthand and typing at school and can type quite fast normally. Though not on this new laptop where everything is at a strange slant. Decided I need to keep practising as the old one is giving up the ghost.

I need to write out 100 times:
I must keep practising on the new laptop.

I prefer real books but find my kindle very helpful. I did slide my finger up the side of the magazine I was reading earlier. Funnily enough nothing happened!

its Paper for me. Apart from this trusty iPad I avoid all other online media if I possibly can.

I am wondering how many people have missed the joke - and the point?

I thought the video was very amusing, interesting too as it’s made through media, shared on this media!
I still like paper, allotment plan in a file, including three year plan and paper for lists, I’m a great list person, notebook available at all times. I also read books, tried a kindle, just doesn’t feel right to me. However, I have a smart phone, iPad, laptop and Alexa, most shopping is done online, as is my banking.

I find it painful to hold a pen so I type which is less painfull. I love paper & nice stationery so paper will never be dead for me. Yesterday I wrote a four page letter to my aunt. Just for fun, I sealed the envelope with a dollop of sealing wax. She'll love that!

I read an article at the weekend by a few journalists complaining that more and more people are getting their daily news and opinions from social media. rather than newspapers. So they may soon be out of work.
I buy a paper about twice a week, plus weekend magazines. otherwise read online.

Thank you for this Maw. Loved it!

WOODMOUSE49 Mon 09-Nov-20 15:53:59

Made me smile Maw. Thank you. Need a few of these at the moment.

silverlining48 Mon 09-Nov-20 15:57:47

Just had a quick look at your link, should have done before I posted. Made me smile ?

Yes, I’ve seen the joke many times and appreciate the thread wasn’t a ‘paper versus screen’ debate. However, I would like to make an often forgotten point.

For people like me with impairments iPads, Kindles and audio books are a godsend. Print books are beautiful objects but very difficult to handle for some of us,
