Has anyone done a cruise in this area? The one I'm looking at starts in Montreal and ends up in Boston. If we do go, we'll probably go in September and add on 5 days in New York at the end. We enjoy a cruise and have never been to Canada. Do you get a feel of the country when you are just stopping of for a short visit at each port [ Quebec, Halifax, Sydney and Charlottestown + cruising through St Lawrence Seaway]? I think you get 2 nights in Montreal before the cruise. Any help appreciated.

I'm doing this in May but from Boston to Montreal with Holland America.

A wonderful part of the world. I backpacked all around there plus Martha's Vingeyard, Cape Cod etc. Last year. Cruising is not for me but I am sure you will enjoy it.. Boston is a compact and interesting city. Make sure you walk the pioneer trail there. Have a wonderful time. HAlifax full of my relatives so I am biased towards that. Very friendly people. Have fun!!

We sailed from Quebec to New York with Princess. It was a ten day cruise. We sailed the St Lawrence river. We then had a port of call every day. It was an amazing cruise. We sailed in September, but we were to early for the fall colours. We did a lot of research on each port of call. The weather was kind to us except for Bar Harbour, it was like a wet day in the Lake District.

I echo that nina . My life is now one of regret for lost opportunity. Just go for it OP and if you like the brief view of somewhere, go back for a longer visit.

Well we went ahead and booked. We fly into Toronto for 2 nights mid Sept and go to Niagara Falls on one of the days. Then a short flight to Quebec, 2 nights there before boarding ship (Royal Caribbean Vision of the Seas - one of their smaller ones) It's an 11 night cruise to New York and we'll have 5 nights there. It all sounds amazing. Thanks for replies.

We went on a cruise from New York up through to Canada and Newfoundland. That was in September. All the stops were wonderful and sailing into Manhatton at dawn, seeing the sunrise over the skyscrapers was the highlight. L
ove to do it again anytime. Yes, you do get a feel for the places.

It will be fab Rosiebee. Toronto is a great city (we were there in the summer and liked the new Aga Khan Museum of Islamic Art, well worth a trip out to the suburbs).
Don't believe the people who tell you Niagara is tacky - it may be on the US side but on the Canadian side it will blow your mind.
And sailing into New York on the QM2 was one of the best experiences of my life.

Brilliant choice, Rosiebee. It took us 2 cruises to do this wonderful route ten years ago - Saga + Fred. Olsen.
Unbelievable! Canada is brilliant - we've been back since to do Vancouver and sail the west coast. Every stop ace and all tours good - and being September the tree colours will be wonderful. Sailing into and out of New York - amazing!! As for the shopping and tours there - awesome. Tops for me were two memories: the Rose Space Centre at the Science Museum near Central Park where I spent 5 hours. And dancing on stage at the Cotton Club in Harlem! (A superb tour cut short by Grimmies (grumbling gripers) who demanded to be taken back to the ship because they didn't like the jazz.). They used to hang out on cruises to get compensation/free cruises. Hope they've long gone.

So be excited, be very excited! Then enjoy and write it up for us and on Trip Adviser when you get home! Bon voyage! X

Me and my family are all from NH, MA, ME and Canada. You will love it and the autumn starting that far north should give you great colours. Fingers crossed they do not have another drought which was a bit of a disaster for fall foliage leaf-peepers.

I have a British friend who married a Quebec chap and emigrated. She is on her fourth year and still sends the most surprising and stunning photos. It's a lovely city.

September I think will give you whale sightings on their migration if I remember...been many years since I have lived on the northern New England seacoast. If you are travelling in the north woods at all on a coach side-trip, you may see moose and deer as it's the rutting season and they are on the move. Also black bear.

Eat lobster! Fresh blueberries in season...blueberry pancakes with local maple syrup. Yum!

We did Niagara in 1993 and went on the Maid of the Mist and got absolutely drenched, even in our blue pancho gear (the Canadian boats wear red LOL) and loved every minute. There is nothing like it. It's truly a stunning natural wonder!

Lucky you, enjoy! sunshine

Jeedge1141 We are thinking of doing the west coast and Canadian Rockies Nat Park(s) and maybe a peek at Alaska. Not sure yet. Hope to do more research. Thank you for posting about Fred Olsen and Saga.

We did this cruise with Holland and America in early May sailing from Montreal to Boston and the second week sailed the return cruise from Boston to Bermuda, spending 3 whole days and nights moored on the main street in the town centre of Hamilton. Montreal & Quebec are lovely and we had a great time visiting the Anne of Green Gables farm from Charlotte Town but there was really nothing to see in Sydney (we have no idea why on earth the cruise lines bother to stop there but guess the mooring fees may be cheap as they want to attract tourists). Even the cruise tour guide said that there was nothing to do there. The next port was Halifax and that was interesting with an extensive range of shops and craft stalls in the port terminal building where we bought most of our gifts and souvenirs. Bar Harbour was beautiful and the tour to the Arcadia National Park on Ollie's Trolley was excellent and very informative. From there we sailed into Boston and would recommend the Boston Tea Party museum and the Hop on Hop off bus tours as a means of transport with a good commentary on the city. Bermuda was beautiful and the best and most cost effective way to see it and get around the whole island is to buy a 1, 2 or 3 day Rover bus ticket which is also valid for using the ferries. If you're leaving the ship in the morning in Boston and your flight is in the evening, we would also recommend booking the water taxi service that collected us at the wharf just outside the cruise terminal (an easy walk from the ship) and took us to their office in the centre of Boston where we were able to store our luggage for the day. We returned there to collect our luggage at the end of the day and they took us across the river to the quay opposite where we were able to get on the free bus transfer to the airport. In our opinion, May was too early in the year to visit as Spring had not arrived in Canada but the weather was warm and sunny in Montreal, Halifax, Bar Harbour and Boston.

Dear Lewlew
Our West Canada stop was part of a Fred.Olsen world cruise itinerary, the other way round! Flew to board ship at Singapore, then ->Hong Kong -> South Vietnam -> China -> Japan -> the Aleutians -> Alaska -> West Coast USA -> Panama Canal -> Azores -> UK. Stunning route of amazing contrasts. Don't know if it's done by any line now, but really worthwhile if you can. Highlight was seeing Alaska in April pre-season. We were often the only ship in port! Hope you have a wonderful time!

Thanks for all comments. I can't believe we're actually going to all the places talked about. I've started a folder online of helpful websites and ideas so will be cutting and pasting advice. Thanks again.smile
