Overwintering in Madiera

I have only been on holiday but it is a beautiful island though very hilly. We stayed near Funchal which has a fascinating old town and nice shops/cafes/restaurants and the cable car of course. There is a lovely newish shopping mall just outside Funchal. The bus service was excellent.
The airport is problematic when crosswinds are high and only specially trained pilots can fly in and out as experienced this last week - Easijet planes were not allowed to fly in and out because of the wind. Apparently too big and people had to stay an extra week or book onto a smaller plane.

Yes thank you. I should have perhaps added that I have been there and know the areas quite well. We are specifically looking for long term rental over the winter months here and I wondered if anyone had any pointers in that direction?

Ha anyone experience of doing this? Does anyone know the island really well and can point me in the right direction of somewhere quiet, but close to public transport, the coast and shops? Open to any sensible suggestions.
