Just listening to the radio and a travel journalist said they'd heard Spain are shutting the borders until September. Has anyone heard this? Really hope it's wrong

BlueBelle Mon 25-Jan-21 16:21:31

Why do you hope it’s wrong I don’t think anyone would really in their heart expect to be travelling to most of Europe before September

Hithere Mon 25-Jan-21 16:37:32

I haven't seen it in any Spanish newspaper
Will check again

Just had an email from E---jet that my flight to Gibraltar to visit friends there, has been cancelled.
The flight has already been moved twice, from April 2020 (it was booked well before anyone had heard of Covid) to late September, then to this April and I'm now going to move it to September again.
I won't risk going at all until things have settled down and I've had both vaccinations but I'd rather keep moving it than cancelling altogether.
I'll get there eventually!!!!

Gibraltar finds itself in a very difficult situation now, for sure.

I heard the island of Ibiza had closed it’s ‘borders’, but didn’t hear September mentioned in relation to the item.

Buffybee it’s odd your Gib flights are being cancelled as both EasyJet and BA had flights today I wonder why you can’t seem to get a flight although I know we’re not supposed to be flying at the moment but someone is using those flights.

Australia are keeping their borders closed until 2022, probably.
UK Nationals can't enter without an exemption visa which might not change until next year anyway.

I really don't know why Easyjet have cancelled my flight tanith, they gave no reason in the email but apologised for any inconvenience and informed me that I could switch to another Easyjet flight for free.
I didn't say that I had been having problems getting a flight, so I don't understand what you mean by that.
I also only stated that they had cancelled my flight, so perhaps it was just this one flight, which would explain the other flights going in and out.
I wouldn't have gone at this time anyway, so now I can change my flight, free of charge.
My friends have told me that there have been no problems with the Spanish at the border since we left the EU, biba70, most probably because it would interfere with the hundreds of Spaniards who cross the border every day to work in Gib.
My friends are quite relieved as they have a villa in Estepona which they visit regularly.

I usually fly to Gib at least twice a year last time just before the first lockdown. I’m just wondering if you actually wanted to go (I realise you don’t yet) could you actually get a flight near your cancelled date? I have family there I haven’t seen for a year now and would love to go as soon as it’s possible.

I have half a plan to visit my brother in Spain end of September.....

Buffybee Mon 25-Jan-21 18:56:32

Hi tanith, I'm not sure about getting a flight nearer to the one which has been cancelled i.e. 29th April as I don't want to go at this time anyway, as things stand with Covid, so I'm going to switch it to September and hope things will be better by then.
If you know Gib well, my friends live at Watergardens on Waterport Road, overlooking the Sunborn and can also see the planes landing, which they take an interest in as her husband is an ex BA Pilot.
I'm going to try to get some information from them about the Spanish border maybe being closed until September, although I'm sure she would have mentioned it to me, as it would stop them going over to their villa.

I read in the Daily Mail that this was a rumour that Spain said was not true. They are hoping to welcome tourists in Spring.

We were booked to go at the end of March but have now re-booked for August.

Flights are being consolidated with some being cancelled. My EJ flights were cancelled although some were still flying.

People who have gone abroad to run holiday accommodation for the British market must be getting worried about the 2021 season.
