I've just heard this programme on Radio 4 - I thought it might help anyone facing grief and loss.
I remember hearing the Dream of Gerontius more than 30 years ago, not long after my father died, and finding it very comforting.

It is a wonderful peice of music and I have had the privilege of singing it several times. So glad you enjoyed it.

There's been some wonderful music on BBC this summer. I particularly enjoyed David Starkie's programmes on music and monarchy.

Thank you jane - I have been down in Devon for two days organising the funeral and clearing more stuff from his home. The funeral is next Friday. I will be glad when it is over.

I remember hearing it at the Albert Hall many years ago - wonderful! I think it was the same night that I saw Jackie Du Pre playing the Elgar concerto.

Just listened to it and am in floods, I think the Angel always sets me off. It was one of the first classical pieces I bought as a teenager and was one of John's favourites pieces. We used to play it VERY loud. I have also sung it a couple of times. Not sure I am going to sleep much tonight. moon

Gally my heart goes out to you.

Oh gally, I don't know what to say, music is so powerful, isn't it? I hope you find some solace too.

Mishap Mon 12-Aug-13 11:14:41

Oh gally - it is certainly powerful stuff, but oh so beautiful. Remember the good times.

Where did you sing it? - there is something special about being inside the music as a performer - a whole different experience to being a listener. Did John sing in it too?

Elegran Mon 12-Aug-13 11:28:26

It is beautiful and touching, Gally.

Deedaa Did you really see/hear J du Pre in the flesh? That and the Dream of Gerontius must have been quite an experience!
