Don't expect many of you caught this on ch 4 late last night? Not something I would usually watch but it came on when I was trying to persuade myself to get up & get ready for bed.
Nine yr old girls being pushed in some cases to do 6hrs of dance training in a day to get ready for competitions which last just minutes. One little girl regularly complains of backache & has visits to Osteopath. Another regularly gets illnesses 2wks before competitions which her Doctor says is down to stress & in fact before the competition shown last night she was on antibiotics for kidney infection but her mum said "you dance with your feet, not your kidneys!"
The mothers were constantly telling them they weren't doing well enough. As for the extreme body positions they insisted on, such as standing on one leg while pointing the other to the ceiling, but it had to be touching the ear while executed & the mother made sure by pushing it!
Pushy mothers is an understatement! It seemed to be more the mothers that were caught up in it all rather than the girls. They start them at 3yrs old apparently.
In fact I thought it was coming close to child abuse or is that just me?

The sight of young kids ballroom dancing makes me cringe. Something about them looking like little adults is just not normal IMO

I didn't watch it though.

Yes, I forgot to mention the spray tans, over the top make up, suggestive outfits (at nearly a thousand pounds).
So many things that were wrong!!

I didn't see the programme, but it doesn't seem a lot different from gymnastics training. My DD started late but was doing 3 or 4 hours after school 5 days a week and all day on Saturdays by the age of 9. A lot of the time was spent building up strength and flexibility (stretching arms and legs in ways they didn't want to go) Any osteopath will tell you it's all very bad - 30 years later she still has a chronic bad back although her carpal tunnel syndrome seems to have cleared up. I enjoyed watching her competing, but all the pushing came from her. Once, when she was unable to use one hand, a doctor suggested she should drop out of a competition - she stared at him as if he was speaking Martian!
We watched a film about Elvira Saadi coaching little Russian gymnasts who seemed to be half starved, worked to exhaustion verbally abused and frequently injured. That seemed like real child abuse to me, but when I asked DD what she thought she said "I wish someone would make me work like that"
