A Crackerjack moment !

As I was getting ready to go upstairs to bed I struggled to take with me the following:

iPad
Mobile
Newspaper
Bottle of water
Notepad and pen
Book
Bookmark

Suddenly a memory of children's television of the 1950/60s popped into my head. Do you remember Crackerjack where 4 children were put on round podiums asked questions and ever time they got one wrong they were given a cauliflower to hold, the first person to drop a cauliflower was out?

I just felt like one of those kids laden down with cauliflowers.

What tv programme do you remember from your youth ?

It was cabbages nan not cauliflower ...if they got 3 or dropped one they were out.

Champion the Wonder Horse.

Wasn't it a cabbage?

Champion the Wonder Horse was one of my favourites. I thought he was the most beautiful horse ever. I used to love the classic serials at teatime on Sundays and the serials of books like Little Women and The Silver Sword.

The phrase 'double or drop' springs to mind when I think of crackerjack for some reason. Yes they were cabbages. Didn't the losing contestants take away a crackerjack pencil and pen? I remember Peter Glaze being one of the presenters.

And Leslie Crowther, of course!

NanKate Thu 13-Mar-14 21:06:06

Thanks you are right it was a cabbage -3 as you say.

I think at one time Eamon Andrews was on the programme. Not sure I have spelt Eamon correctly, anyone fron Ireland who can help ?

NanKate Thu 13-Mar-14 21:06:46

From not fron !

KatyK Thu 13-Mar-14 21:09:31

Oh yes of course Leslie Crowther. Programmes I used to love were Sugarfoot, Cheyenne, Wagon Train (Robert Horton was lovely - I believe he is still alive), Rawhide, and for younger children Twizzle, Torchy the Battery Boy, The Woodentops. I'm sure there is another thread on this subject somewhere......

Yes, cabbages!
I loved Laramie and Bronco. We didn't have ITV so used to have to go to a friend down the road to watch Robin Hood and all those ones.

The thread KatyK mentioned might be '1950s Children's TV' (under the forum topic 'Television and Radio', on page 2 at the bottom) which started in November 2013.

Oh gosh there are so many I loved and all the ones mentioned I love. Especially Fury, Champion the Wonder Horse, Lassie, Rin Tin Tin, William Tell, Robin Hood, Circus Boy, The Wooden Tops, Rag Tag and Bobtail, Picture Book Andy Pandy, Bill and Ben and CrackerJack. Laramie, Wagon Train, Rawhide, High Chaparall(or something like). I loved them all and love to look at clips of some of them on youtube etc. Doesn't it take you back, I am not sure whether it makes me feel old or makes me feel young again. Oh I just love to think about them all. grin

I remember when my children were young (that is when I watched all the children's programmes) Black Beauty was a favourite of my daughter's and I was in the middle of bathing my son, when she came running into me, 'Mummy, mummy, they're going to kill Black Beauty!' Mum to the rescue, son quickly out of bath (surprised) and lo and behold, Black beauty was safe - had to be, it was on the following week! Happy days.

Champion The Wonder Horse was so lovely, every little girl wanted to own him. I also liked Mr. Ed [talking horse!]I can't remember watching much tv as I was always playing out as a child.

harrigran Fri 14-Mar-14 18:26:21

We never had television sad

broomsticks Fri 14-Mar-14 21:40:33

I think I liked Fury better than Champion, but my dad always used to start singing 'Champion the Wonder Horse' irrespective of which horse it actually was, or for that matter, whether it was a horse at all.
