I am just watching an excellent programme about Elvis presented by Joanna Lumley.

It showed what a brilliant singer he was, with no prejudice against people of colour, what a guy.

I loved and still do his music which covers all genres.

He was the KING.

Totally agree Nankate
He was brought up on gospel music and then the blues.
Think I also did a thread a while back
Saying ....
Elvis is Kingsmile

We were talking about 'flashbulb' memories today and the day Elvis died is one of mine.

DH and I and our 3 eldest children (the younger two weren't born) were on a beach in the south of France when we spotted a person reading a French newspaper with the headline 'le Roi Est Mort'.

If only he hadn't gone down the tubes and eaten himself silly and been surrounded with a lot of sycophantic hangers on. He could have entertained us for many more years.

I saw Priscilla today talking about him and her face, sadly, was immobile. Not a wrinkle in sight.

I was on the bus on the way to college when somebody shouted Elvis is Dead
Can't believe its 40yrs

John Lennon is another flashbulb moment in time.

I liked Elvis and I have to admit to thinking I would not want to have seen him in his eighties.

He was so handsome. I like the fact 40 years on Priscilla Presley has never said a bad word against him. (not that I am aware of).

I was/am another big fan of Elvis, although I must admit to preferring his ballads rather than rock `n` roll, even though that`s what originally made his name. Has anyone got the 2 albums of his songs backed by the London Philharmonic orchestra? They sound wonderful!

I really enjoyed the programme. Loved seeing the family photos and videos when he was so young and handsome.

I loved Elvis, that man was SO handsome and I loved his voice he was certainly one of my swoons he was badly advised which always surprised me as he seemed so competent and able it was so sad he went down the route of pill popping and that lovely body got all bloated
I agree Pricilla has never spoken badly about him and they seemed to stay friends but her over worked face and her oh so nice manner really irritates me ( Sorry Priscilla)

I was 15 when Elvis died. I remember my mum, dad, sister and I we were in a caravan in South Yorkshire at the time.

I agree with others he was so handsome he was almost beautiful. My mum adored him.

I would love to visit Graceland.

BlueBelle Thu 17-Aug-17 08:12:30

I m different there I have no interest in Graceland it's all part of the money making that destroyed the man I can't stand over the top materialistic stuff
I did hear that it's much smaller than it looks in photos it looks huge

passed me by,I ddn't even know it was 40 years ago .I wasn't a fan but it was a particularly busy/difficult year for me so my focus was on other things. To be honest I've never been someone who grieves for celebrities I dont know in person/have never met so it likely wouldn't have affected me anyway .I think the only death I clearly remember was JFK when I was about 8 and only because my Granny and Mum were upset by it.Being Irish granny was very proud someone from her neck of the woods made it to President of the USA .

I saw a picture of him in a book once (when he was in his 20s). The caption underneath read 'Elvis, looking more handsome than 20 movie stars' I agree with that smile I would love to have seen him live. I wasn't really interested in him when I was a teenager - I was a Beatles girl. My older sister loved him and as I got older I began to see what she saw in him.

My mum and dad went BlueBelle and as you say it is smaller than they imagined . My mum was a massive Elvis fan and she said she just felt that she had to go . I doubt I will make it in this lifetime though .smile

There was a 1/2 hour programme on BBC4 last night showing photos taken of Elvis before Parker clamped down on the 'wrong' sort of publicity. I'm not a huge Elvis fan but I found the programme fascinating and I'm angry that his manager nipped his talent in the bud and packaged him in a way that destroyed his talent and creativity which [imo] ultimately killed him.

'The Worlds Most Photographed' it was called, although I assume the photos have been used in the other documentaries about him...
