I have just been watching Say Yes To The Dress on Quest Red.

During the ad breaks Currys were advertising their great Crimbo give away.

I'm seriously annoyed!

It's Christmas, not Crimbo!!

Should I complain to the Advertising Standards Authority? Or do you think I'm being silly?

I think this should be in AIBU as I'm having a bit of a rant. Excuse me.

You rant away but I think you are wasting your time complainig.
Their guidelines don't cover a personal dislike of a word grin

I agree it's irritating, but ignore it. I first heard it when I went to live in Liverpool 40 years ago. Just let it wash over you and try not to catch the ad! I think John Lennon called it Chrimble.

It's no longer in vogue to use the right and proper words for anything now. Language has changed so we just have to go with the flow like it or not. Sadly.

It's better than Xmas. I know that's written but it irks me.
I don't mind Crimbo, I admit I've used it myself.

I’m with you on this one Mini.

I get annoyed with all the adverts for Advent Calendars that are full of gifts eg Boots and no mention of the real significance of Advent. I appreciate there are many non Christian people who celebrate Christmas, but IMO Christmas gets watered down year by year.

The X in Xmas is the Greek abbreviation of the word for Christ. I used to hate seeing the word, but since I learnt that, I rather like it. I cannot stand Crimbo.

You don't hear the " Father Christmas " description much now, it's all Santa.

BlueSapphire - I also changed my mind about Xmas.
Santa Claus is all right, from Saint Nicholas.

Never liked Xmas no idea why just hated it even when a small child but I also prefer Merry Christmas to Happy Christmas, again no idea why. Crimbo is a stupid word as is Shampoo for Champagne but I don’t get annoyed anymore.

If you look at all the new words now going into dictionaries, particularly those online, you could seriously damage your health. Younger people like to change words to suit themselves or fit better in a text message or whatever they use. No doubt in 50 years all these non words will be replaced by the then craze. We just have to blow out a deep breath and let it go. Nobody will listen at any official level because the young are the only ones who get notice anymore.

Slipping into another topic now but a generation that believes what the older generations knows, has learnt, has achieved, etc., is irrelevant to them. It won’t be a very nice place. It’s the 1980’s era horrible ME ME type of person encapsulated into a certain young age group. I’m truly glad I won’t be around after anything like 25+ years. I don’t think this world will be a very understanding or gentle place. Add in the problems of weather, food, water and no definitely not a nice place. You can bet the older ones and that might become over 40 wont get allocated anything. I truly believe it’s going to be a bit like that movie Soylent Green. I think that it’s name.

Hope everyone has a nice day.

Why bother to watch stuff that celebrates Xmas as if it's nothing but over -eating and greed? You cannot change consumerism all on you own with a little letter of complaint/

Why not start a thread about what Xmas means for you, personally and what it can mean for other spiritual people?

Alexa Mon 11-Nov-19 10:39:52

BTW when people call Christmas Crimbo they are alluding, cryptically, to the fact that the non-spiritual event is a lot of light= hearted nonsense.
