If you're a fan of strong, lead female characters like Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace, not Rooney Mara) in the film The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, you might enjoy The Queen's Gambit-

"Set during the Cold War era, orphaned chess prodigy Beth Harmon struggles with addiction (and family history of mental illness and genius) in a quest to become the greatest chess player in the world."

When's it on?

Oh, sorry, I should have included where to watch it- Its on Netflix- Its a series that was released in its entirety, so you don't have to wait for episodes-

Ah thanks. Don't have Netflix.

Thanks rosecarmel. I was wondering whether to give that a try.

I started watching this yesterday and am hooked. Beth is such a strange person to look at and fits this role perfectly. Loved her poor step mum. This is such a different kind of series in terms of the subject and i can't guess what is going to happen which will keep me interested until the end. Love the clothes the ladies are wearing too. Win win in my book!!!

It’s absolutely brilliant and I know next to nothing about chess! Also love that it’s set in the 60s and can relate to the era.

Just finished watching this, so so good, husband loved it as he is a good chess player, i know nothing about chess but was completely hooked, great songs from the 60s, haven't watched anything so good on netflix since The Crown.

DH is watching this, I dismissed it because I know nothing about chess but he has persuaded me that it is about much more than chess. Now that I have finished watching The Last Tycoon I will start watching it before The Crown starts.

Another going to give it a go! I read the trilague beginning with "The Girl with the Dragoon Tattoo" by Stieg Larsson. Beautifully written and a classic of outstanding use of English in its translation.

Just finished "V2" by Robert Harris interesting read. My genre very much WW2 thrillers/spies and if factual so much the better. Good factual reads "The Volunteer" the true story of the polish resistance hero who infiltrated Auschwitz.
Another, "The Spy and the Traitor" ( British Agent - Oleg Antonovich Gordievsky) by Ben Macintyre. If real heroines your thing recommend the women of SOE. And beginning with "A life in Secrets - Vera Atkin and the Missing Agents of WWII".

Read the title, didn’t see it was under TV and immediately thought it was about how the Queen proposed to reinstate Andrew.

It set a record!

62 million:

"Netflix has confirmed “The Queen's Gambit” is its biggest scripted limited series in history, launching to a record-breaking 62 million households over its first 28 days of release, the streamer claims."

I’ve recommended it to lots of family members and they’ve all loved it. I might watch it again it was so good.

I have watched this and it is superb. What a good story.

WOODMOUSE49 Sun 29-Nov-20 23:15:12

Excellent to the very end. Loved the fashions.

I play chess badly but it wouldn't matter if you know nothing about the game.

It's still in the top 10 on Netflix.

It know nothing at all about chess but loved this. There were several points where it could have gone down a really dark road but then somehow or another it didn’t. So despite the thread of sadness that ran through it from the beginning there was also a triumphant air of optimism - in all sorts of different ways.
